How much to build a bike?

Posted on
  • Just been to my LBS as I was thinking of letting him build my bike as there are a few things I can't do or haven't got tools for

i.e. fitting bb and headset, re-cutting the thread on the forks, wrapping bars etc

he said it would be £100

seems steep to me, is this about right?

  • You can't wrap the bars? Plenty of videos on youtube on how to do this.

Maybe post a list of all the jobs you asked the LBS so we can see what he's charging for.

  • well it would be fitting bb and headset, running a die down the forks and fitting them, wrapping the bars, fitting crank and downtube shifters, front mech, seatpost, and cables

No, I have never wrapped bars, it's my first road build and I don't want to make a pigs ear of it

  • £100 sounds good value.

So you take in a load of parts and it comes out built? Does that include tuning in brakes and gears?

  • How long do you think each of these tasks will take, and how many specialist tools?

    It sounds like reasonable value.

  • well it would be fitting bb and headset
Borrow a tool, a hammer and a plank of wood

running a die down the forks and fitting them
    is this necessary?

    wrapping the bars
    Fun part

fitting crank and downtube shifters, front mech, seatpost, and cables
you should really be doing these yourself- not difficult and will add to your knowledge

No, I have never wrapped bars, it's my first road build and I don't want to make a pigs ear of it
Give it a go, Bartape can be as cheap as a fiver for two rolls and you'll never have to pay for it to be done by your LBS (because you will certainly need to replace it soon enough).

    Good luck though, enjoy it

  • I would do it myself apart from the few snagging points

The forks do need a die as the head set won't go over the messed up bit of thread

Don't know anyone with a campag tool for the bb

I guess I could just get him to do the forks bb and headset

I was just wondering if I was having my hat nailed on

  • If you're based in London you should try the London Bike Kitchen... http://www.lbk.org.uk/
Membership is £10, and then £10 per hour after that...
Instead of paying someone to do it for you, you can pay them to teach you how to do it yourself...
Very nice people there, and you're bound to save money that way...
