Steerer Tube/Stem Safety Advice Please.

Posted on
  • Hi, I've just built up my new frame with old components, going to up grade to new compnents when I can afford it.

The steerer tube is 7 millimetres too short for the new frame though. It's a Thomson stem, the steerer tube clamp is 35 millimeres.

I know this is possibly not safe enough to ride, so, are there any stems availible that have a shorter/narrower steerer clamp?

    Any reccomendations?

Alternativly, what's a good mid-range carbon fibre fork for around £200, similar to the present fork I've got (Reynolds Ouzo Pro)?

Sorry if this has been addressed before but I don't know what key words I'd use to search for a topic like this, it seems too complicated.

  • Reynolds Ouzo Pro, is a full carbon fork, and I'd say it is unsaf eto use if it's too short.

If it's 1 1/8 there should be loads of suitable options around. 1" and you'll be struggling.

  • Most stems have a stack height of between 35 and 40 mm. You could probably find a 32-33mm stack height stem. But thats still on the unsafe side of short. The recommended set-up for clamping a threadless steerer. Is to have the steerer protuding abover the stem, and then use a spacer above this to allow the headset adjuster to work. This is expecially true for carbon steerers.

    New fork time I'm afraid.

  • The Thomson is one of the lower clamp size stems .. another reason I don't like them because they don't spread the load so well over the steerer tube.

Anyway, like SF I think it's new fork time .. Unless you're using an external headset in which case you may be able to gain some height with a different headset of lower stack height ..
