Raleigh Pub Bike

  • So i'm currently still working on the Overbury's 531 project but that's nearing completion and have been keeping my eye out for a new frame.

This "Raleigh 22'' Steel Racing Bike Frame" popped up on ebay with a buy it now of 99p (which i can only assume was a mistake after the mamssive effort that had gone into the description) which i thought would make a good next project.

Wanting to go naked on this one i think so will need to start tracking down parts. I'm definitely going to stick some bullhorn's on but will just find other bits and bobs as and when. Got a set of deep V rims which i may well use as well. Not sure on the whole colour scheme though so any suggestions would be good.

Also, this looks like a reynolds frame to me ? I might be totally wrong but if anyone could shed any light it'd be interesting to know.

  • 99p! What a bargain. I quite like the frame colour but the forks need to be painted to match surely

  • Yea that's what i thought. I'm pretty sure it must have been a mistake as after the massive description he'd written he put bid with confidence as i've got 100% positive feedback. Ooops, ha.

It did say that the frame was pretty tatty so i'll have a look when i get it and see what i think.

  • Is there no chance he could ask ebay to cancel the sale cos of the mistake or has it all been paid for and posted?

  • It's been paid for and he's already contacted me to arrange collection.

  • Can anyone offer any suggestion of what decals to put on this ? Want to try and track down some original Raleigh ones in black if poss but struggling to find them on ebay.

  • Hlloyd have millions of Raleigh decals - take your pick

  • Fab, cheers Rik. Frame arrives on Friday so the build will begin at last

  • Finally got the frame delivered over the weekend and all in all it's in good nick. It does, however, look like the paint job has been done by a five year old with their fingers. I've therefore started stripping it back a bit, the forks had sooooo much excess on so took a while.

Anyway, to give an idea of what i've got ...

With the crank that's goign to be going on ...

With one of the wheels that will be temporarily going on.

I'm going to use the deep V's that i've got kicking around for now until i can find/afford what i want (preferably some grey mavic rims with dura ace hubs).

    On the shopping list:

Gum wall tires - probably some more lugano's
    Headset - any suggestions ?
    Quill stem
    Bullhorn bars
    Tape
    Dia Compe lever
    Front brake
    Bottom Bracket
    Chain
    Seat post + screw
    Brooks saddle

Think that's about it for now. Just going to rat can the front forks black for now. I don't want to spend loads of money on this but will see what i think when i start making some progress on the build.

    Thoughts would be good.

  • Dia compe do a £12 black headset if your keeping the lugs black.

  • Some time has passed since my last post here but i've finally got around to starting to build this up but am in need of advice. I've just bought these Wolber rims laced to campag record hubs.

Does anybody know what the situation might be in terms of making this single speed ? I've seen spacing kits available but that seems to only be for a cassette.

    Any ideas ?

    AJ

  • When you screw your sprocket onto the hub thread you'll probably find you've lost your chainline. You need to measure how much you need to pull the sprocket over by and then space the axle accordingly. On your record hubs you have that rather pretty turned silver spacer on the drive side between the cones and lock nuts. you'll need to swap this out for something shorter and then put the balance on the non-drive side between cone and lock nut.
(The easiest way to do this is to take the existing spacer off and hacksaw off the amount required for good chainline, and put the bit you've chopped off on the other side, but on Record hubs that's really not an option!!)
When you fit the wheels you'll find they're not running down the centre of the seat and chain stays, so you'll need to re-dish the wheel to pull it back in.

They look like rather pretty wheels - are you sure you want to do this?

  • do not do it! i can swap you some fixed/ss wheels..........

  • and are you sure you want to put them on that frame anyway......oh shit, i'm a bike snob.

  • They do look like a stunning set of wheels!

  • Yea, don't worry about the frame, i'm stripping it all back and getting it powdered the same colour grey as on the rims. Definitely done well with spotting them i think. I've just tried the rear on the frame to see and it doesn't fit with those spacers on anyway :-( So i can't even put gears on if i'd have wanted to can i ? I'm definitely keeping hold of the wheels .... and for £60 you can't really go wrong huh !!

What do you guys think the best course of action may be for them ? I'm open to suggestions... Gears, no gears. If gears then i'm just conscious that this "cheap" build will start to get pretty expensive. Also, lucky you are right, i'm not sure i want to plough money into building a nice bike onto a shit frame ....

This is a full shot btw ...

  • Very nice looking wheels - £60's a very nice price too.
If you do want to go gears and are feeling adventurous you can re-space your rear dropouts to suit the wheels... http://www.lfgss.com/post3088155-37.html
It's not a scary thing to do you just need to be a bit brave, but not get too carried away!!

  • Ah fab, thanks. By the time i'd read this i'd actually already managed to get it to fit with a good bit of brute force ! Still deciding on what to do about gears now but i'll report back ! Cheers for the help Rik !

  • When you say you got it to fit with brute force, do you mean you perma-bent the rear triangle in a bit, or just pushed inwards hard until you could mount the wheel?

  • If you haven't seen them, the guru has articles on fixed gear conversions, with further information on chainline and most importantly, about chainline on singlespeeds.
