Shamal help

Posted on
  • Hi everyone,

currently looking for a set of road geared shamals, which I need to fix-gear for a few months (long story).

My question is, how exactly would I go about fixing the free-wheel. I'm really not clued up on conversions as I've usually just bought fixed wheels.

  • The cassette's are a bastard to service. Get a friend to help, and a bit of string and a lot of patience helps when it comes to getting the pawls back in the hub..

  • I don't think he wants to fix them, he wants to convert them to fixed wheel.
And I don't think you can, without a hammer!

  • Ah shit, skim reading fail. Why would you even suggest such a thing james1234? Just buy some track wheels.

Because the bike it's going on will be fixed-gear on Shamals until I can afford Campagnolo gearing! Haha

  • You could run it SS. Fixed is either going to require a rebuild with a track hub or some bodged hammer horror.

  • There are widgets to do this with Shimano cassette hubs - never encountered campag ones, nor have I removed the freehub body from a campag hub, so I can't be certain that you could do the same.....

  • Just buy some cheapo fixed wheels untill you can afford a decent set of track wheels. It would be a shame to destroy a set of Shamals, just to get them fixed.

Also forgot to mention the bike will be going in a shop window on display until I can afford gears..haha.

  • its possible, but not ideal.

its been done and explained in this thread on the nz fixed forum/. there is sketches+tech drawing somewhere of this same process.

  • If it's going in a shop window, just build it as a singlespeed, who's going to know whether the fixed gear is functioning or not? Alot of Joe Public think road tires are solid rubber...

  • Hmmm, real dilemma. Goddam vintage bikes are so expensive.

  • Space it to single speed.. Nobody will know. Don't even think about messing with shamals.. If you consider it you shouldn't own shamals

  • Please, mate, don't fix the wheel, Shamals are rare, expensive and very awesome.
The best suggestion was as the others told you - make it SS and don't even think about ruining it.
Lady Campagnolo would be very sad if you would DIY fix it in a shitty way..

Hi, I have a couple of 12 HPW disposed from my old road bike.
It was equipped with 8v Campagnolo Record Carbon.
Now I'm intrested in converting these wheels to fixed single speed.
Could you tell me more about the converter you made?
The fact you dont ruin the wheel is a good point indeed.
I have a lathe and can do some mechanical work if needed...
    Thanks a lot!
