Don't go any ratio higher than 74gi otherwise you'll struggle. But also 74 is good on the downhill and isn't too 'spinny' on the flats

I'm going fully geared up. Fucked if I want to go up any big alps on 74gi, though massive props to those that do.

I did the Marmotte route minus l'Alpe d'Huez as part of a long weekend away a couple of months ago.
I was pretty out of shape at the time and would have really struggled with the Alpe as well. An amazing, beautiful days riding though - except for the boring drag from St Etienne (I think) to St Michel.Fixed??! Sod that!

Not doing it fixed? Pffffffff.

In mid-October the weather on top of the Galibier could be tough.
Its a fair bet that if in the valley it is 11C and raining it will be snowing at the top. -

Jung, look at places to stay in La Grave.. easy striking distance for galibier and alpe d'huez... a fab spot for you and the missus.. plus get to visit La Meije when you are not on the bike

Cheers chaps.
I need a holiday and want to ride my bike.
Are these 3 do-able in a day? Would be the classic St Michel-de-Maurienne - Telegraphe - Galibier - Huez route?
I'm inserting my perverted cycling fantasies into a long weekend away with the missus, so a day is all I have.
I did a loop around the Mortirolo and Gavia (which was HARD) last year but was in better shape.
Also, are they still passable in mid october?
