Cyclocross on a singlespeed

Am thinking of doing a few of the local 'cross races ( wessex league , oxford way ) on my Specialized Singlecross .
Anybody raced on one of these or similar ? Would appreciate any advice on gearing etc .
Completely stock at mo running 42x18 .
Have no illusions of podium greatness , just want to have some fun and try and improve as the season progresses .

I'm thinking of doing the same on my Bianchi San Jose but wasn't sure if I might just damage myself irrevocably
