I see your point.
But by that logic why bother with the hassle of fitting a new headset and just buy a whole new bike?

If you can measure it all accurately or have the headset make and model you will be able to order new ones online. If not, pop to your LBS and they should be able to sort you out for under a fiver. You'll have to take your bike or old bearings or both with you.

Thanks. The old bearings were in a circular casing, which snapped. I still have this and some of the bearings, would that be enough for them to go on?
The headset is described on the bike manufacturers website as "Headset- Alloy Aheadset,1 1/8”. Would that enable them to give the right bearinga without taking the bike? I can't ride it and I don't think there's a shop that close to me.

Hey Jack,
Its Tom (Lu's boyfriend) did the circular casing you mentioned look something like this:http://image.made-in-china.com/2f0j00UsfTEYSGRRqK/Bearing-Cage-Bearing-Cage.jpg
If it is and has snapped, what sort of condition is the actual bearing race in? Are there any marks on it, if so the best thing is just a new headset. But otherwise you can put new bearings (With 1 extra and plenty of new grease) Onto the race without a cage. All you need to do is measure one of the bearings and let me know the size. that way I can bring you them tomorrow!

Yeah it looks kind of like that.
The top one has snapped in about five places. Should both of the bearings and races on the headset (top and bottom) be the same size? My top bearings are smaller.

Awesome, well as long as the race isn't pitted like I described its fairly simple to put it back together with new bearings in the top. It doesn't matter if each side is different as long as all the bearings on each race are the same. Its gonna be pretty hard to measure a bearing exactly without a proper bearing ruler but measure its width in the middle in inches (the most it will be in 1/4" but its more likely to be 3/16") it has to that exact though!

Cheers! Will take my bearings to a shop near me in the morning. If they don't have any they'll be able to tell me the size. I know I'm being tight not buying a new headset but I'm really tempted to get a geared bike, and that'll skint me!

There's nothing wrong with replacing bearings in a headset, its daft to replace your headset if there isn't anything wrong with it other than something which should be expected every few 1000s miles!
Just make sure you use good grease! (Juice Lubes Bearing Juice is rad)

Cheers man! See you tomorrow.
Having just taken apart, and had my headset apart to grease, the bearings that sit below my handlebars case was broke.
After the fun of picking them all up and putting them in the bin, I'm now looking for a new bearing/casing thing.
It's a 1 1/8 unsealed headset.
If anyone has a decent new headset going cheap, I'd consider that too, although I'm pretty poor (but always after a bargain, which is probably why I am poor).
Thanks
I put this for sale by mistake, should have been wanted.
