  • A lot of people think cheap and lightweight don't really go together, i think i'll be able to go under 7kg without spending over £300-350

    concept of bike

98% of parts will be 2nd hand to keep costs minimal
i'll build some ss wheels by finding the cheapest/lightest components, etc etc
sanding parts down, machining parts myself to get them lighter

this will not be a suicide bike, i'm not going to drill holes in my frame either, i weigh 78kg and can push srs watts, so durability should not be compromised

ye, feedback is appreciated, i will be going ahead on this project even if everyone on the forum said its a stupid idea
Justin Bieber - Never Say Never ft. Jaden Smith - YouTube

  • This could be interesting.

  • Tempted to nerg because of Beiber

  • i was tempted to do Drake - The Motto
    lol

    yolo

  • sub 5kg claimed weight.

  • Guessing fixed?

  • Probably, might be brakless too

  • I'm not sure quite how you are going to achieve this but it should be interesting.

My budget weenie component of choice is the Kalloy Uno Asa 105 stem (which has been renamed as Kalloy Uno Seven for 2013). The listed weight was correct and I got mine down to 100g with ti bolts.

  • It depends how much of the stuff you have already, I guess.

If you have a Langster frame kicking about the 350 could probably be enough to get near the target.

    Road cranks?
    Drops, pursuit or risers?
    Seatpost?

  • got me interested... apart from the poor taste...

  • subscribed

  • Under 7kg should be easy though. Even on a budget.

  • how ?,,,,,,,unless hes a midget

  • There's nothing to a track bike in components.

    This weighs 6.3kg

The older frames weigh about the same and are fairly cheap now, changing the wheels won't increase the weight that much

  • Under 7kg should be easy though. Even on a budget.

Agree, shouldn't be too hard for fixed and brakeless

  • thats ^ lovely mate.. was just thinking my langster cost 300 and weighs about 8ish kg

  • Cheap china carbon will be your friend.

  • Very interesting to see where this is gonna go. What frame are you gonna use?

  • An interesting quest which should be known as 'Weight Meanies'.

  • A lot of people think cheap and lightweight don't really go together, i think i'll be able to go under 7kg without spending over £300-350

Start big then, alu frame like a second hand CAAD10 are around 1050g.

Once you get the frame sorted, the rest should be a bit easier to get around 7kg.

After you've build it up, you end up realising there's very much little difference in how the bike ride regardless of whether it's 9kg or 7kg.

  • hey there.

im from vienna austria, working as a messenger for over 5 years and im tryin to build a nice, light new bike now. maybe you can help me/know some nice stuff :)

right now im riding a tokyo fixed dart with miche pistard front wheel and self build archetype/lowhub wheel rear, omnium 48, old 3t dropbar, vredestein tricomp, titanio saddle.....and so on, who cares, its all black and i like it......its around 7,8kg which is kind of "ok" for a steel frame. but since i have a second 30h/w job and i can almost never go to the track (trainingtimes/work time) i mostly ride around in the forrest/hills whatever you would call that (the uk has probly less mountains than austria;) 50-100km with 500-1000m climb on 48x17. its big fun i love to race all the old roadbike fags but i need a lighter bike to go faster.

i orderd a vigorelli but i dont really like it (looks, heavy fork)
im interessted in the low bikes, but i think its a "fixie trend" thing and its like 3748743 months waiting time. but the are under 1,5kg/frame
ldg aero sounds nice and i could get a look 464 for cheap (around 1.8kg with fork)
dosnoventa tokyo looks fucking nice but its pricey.

i want a frame under 1.5kg alu (or carbon maybe if not too pricey)
around 1000€ but less would be nice of course....
fork maybe the 3t rigida stealth around 340g (or the ltd 280g)?
wheels am classic track, around 1400g/pair ?

if my calculations are right the bike should be around 6kg in the end ?!

    any suggestions?

    thx a lot !

search ingria bicycles online mate, they have a claimed weight of 1.3-4kg and are €500, and look pretty damn cool. The rest you could spend on upgrading to the 3t ltd's and get some lightweight components if that's what you're interested in, u.s.e. do pretty lightweight stuff for components like stem, handlebars and seatpost (if you do want a use seatpost i have a 27.2 alloy one for sellz, pm me), in terms of wheels, mack hubs are the lightest and you could get halo aerotracks (rebranded kinlin 270's) for a light, strong wheelset.

  • My suggestion is to stop worrying About the weight and start loving the ride.

The Dart is very heavy as it is (over 2kg for the small model), it shouldn't take much to lighten it, a Dolan Seta would shed 1kg easily.
