Minor Collision, need advice.

  • Hello,

    Had a recent collision nothing major just hit a pockmark pretty hard and noticed a few things;

The frame is Reynolds 531c fyi, deep V rimms unsure of the brand.

    1.

Both my front wheel and rear wheel are fully functional, BUT, woble slightly, i think the rear is touching the brake during the wobble but breakes are adjusted pretty tight. I have loosened for now.

Was advised that this is dangerous and an indication that the wheel could buckle any moment? Is this true? In any case what would you recommend going to a mechanic for wheel truing or getting the whole wheel replaced? These are Deep V rims, I will post some pics later.

    2.
Stem or fork is slightly loose, wobbles up and down. The exact source of problem is the big round nut thingy that lies over the stem and attaches to the actual frame doesnt scrue on completely It screws right through as In it doesnt seem to stop no matter how many times I turn. I believe the swivly abrasions on the stem or the fork are worn out? Would you recommend replacing the part or can a mechanic rectify such issue?

    3.
Aside from that the bike frame has 2 small peny sized dents on the top bar of the frame, I am unsure but would like to know if these could possibly compromise the structure safety of the bike?

  • Difficult to give advice without seeing the bike but if there's any doubt it needs looking at by someone who knows about bikes, no offence but that doesn't seem like you. I say take it to the LBS.

  • He's posting here because they're are poeple who know just as much if not more than he'll find out at his local bike shop, but then won't be roped into spending loads.

From my limited knowledge your wheels are fine and shouldn't suffer any random catastrophic failure, although they do need a minor truing.

Sounds like the threads on your fork and/or headset locknut are gone, so yeah they'd need replacing, but...

...seeing as you have two penny sized dents and the frame has been in a crash, sounds like a write off to me mate, as a frame can suffer a catastrophic failure if it's dented etc

Although yes seeing the stuff in the real would really help, and bear in mind this is based on my inferior knowledge.
Get some pics and hopefully a more authority figure can give you some advice

  • Will post some pics in a few hours. JUst wanted to know if anyone had experience.

The part relating to the threads worn out is correct, could not find the words to explain properly - my apologies.

Stand By for pics, leaving the office in a bit.

  • I've just had a buckled wheel due to hitting a deep pothole severely hard at some speed. This was around 2 months ago and it finally gave out yesterday whilst on my way home from work ( i couldnt afford to get a new wheel). I had the wheel looked at by a mechanic who trued it and gave it a so-so future life. In my experience if the collision was at all 'severe' by any standards, try and avoid using those wheels at all if possible. When my wheel buckled yesterday it gave out the loudest bang i have ever heard, like a gunshot, followed by a huge jump in my front wheel. Had the lights i had been stopped at been green, well lets just say I would probably be lying in a hospital bed right now, or worse. Don't risk it.

Sounds like you may also need a new headset as you mention it doesn't tighten no matter what you do.

As Vesalius, sounds like your bike is in need of some thorough inspection but as always visual inspection is better than guesses over the internet.

  • ^ wow. What parts of the wheel had actually failed? Spokes snapped? Flange ripped from hub? Rim broken or pringled?

  • If the loud bang was a tyre blowout, it might be unrelated to the previous wheel damage.

  • The rim pringled which caused spokes to pierce both inner tube and the tyre in some places, i will admit i nearly sh*t myself when it went bang, the hub started making some grinding noises following this event :p Only good for the bin ......... or frame it.
