I've seen various bits and pieces on the web about issues with the lockring on ellipses not tightening down enough. The fix appears to be a small freehub spacer on after the cog, then on with the lockring. Re: the lockring itself, I don't see any reason a PW wouldn't work, but again, evidence suggests that a mavic lockring is more suited...

i use to use dura ace lockring on on my ellipse worked fine

Buy the mavic one. Steel if you can get one.PW is same as campag and miche, mavic is a freaky metric specification, and DA works with almost everything else. You can fit a DA lockring onto a mavic track hub, but it will be more likely to strip.

Mavic is 33x1.0 (French standard)
Campag is 1.32" x 24tpi (Italian standard)(33.53x1.06)
Shimano is 1.290" x 24tpi (ISO & JIS standard)(32.77x1.06) -

I don't see any reason a PW wouldn't work
It won't work because the threads are different sizes

It wasn't fine, you just got away with it
You can fit a DA lockring onto a mavic track hub,** but only if you're an idiot**

To clarify: I never said that one should fit a shimano lockring to a mavic hub, merely that it was possible (though highly inadvisable) to thread it on. Many people incorrectly assume that it must be ok if it threads on. I thought it worthwhile to politely inform a previous poster of this without calling anyone an idiot.

It wasn't worthwhile; at best, you're disseminating misinformation and bad practice, at worst you could be leading an innocent down the path to expensive hub destruction. How would you feel if somebody had taken your advice and applied it to a Comete (same thread), resulting in a £1600 loss when the lockring threads are stripped?

I'm considering Ellipses on the new build.
Can someone confirm.. You can run any cog, but only the mavic lockrings?
I'm hearing a lot about people struggling with the lockrings not tightening up enough...Is this truth?
Also how are the wheels in general for everyday street riding?

You are correct. Mine has taken a fair amount of abuse and is still pretty much true

I haven't tried this as both my bikes have bolt on sprockets but might a bit of fibre grip between the cog and the lock ring help to keep things tight?

↑This too. Ignore the spoke count, 2kg for wheels with track hubs gets you some tough wheels.

Cheers all.
Once I sell my current bike they're definitely going on the list then.
@umop3pisdn - how did you ensure your all tight? -

I've been running them for 2 years on London potholes and on rougher terrain further afield. They are as straight and true today as the day I bought them. I've heard a few people mention the lock ring loosening but this has never been an issue for me.

Don't know why you'd struggle to get the locking tight enough. I think the previous gen had problems? Used mine brakeless without issue.

Sweet.

Maybe the people who had lockring trouble weren't using Mavic lock rings? An Italian (Campag, Miche, Phil) lockring will go on, but only because the excess diameter lets the incorrect pitches mesh over the 5 or 6 turns needed. As a result, the thread flank contact is all to fuck, making for a very weak joint.

^ ah yeah i think you might be right mate

I've used a dura-ace lockring on my bike and its fine, but now that i've read all the responses i'm startong to get worried :l
ive had a quick look and none of the big brand sellers actually stock these! if anyone has seen one for sale do you mind giving me a shout!

you see, if you didnt know you would be fine.
Hi,
I want to put a fixed cog on my Ellipses. Is there anything different about the Ellipses? Will aPhil Wood lock ring fit?
Thanks
