BB spindle dislocated

Posted on
  • The spindle in this chorus 102mm bottom bracket has become dislocated. Probably because i overtighted the crank bolts on one side wich might have pulled it a bit. Problem now however is that it started to scrape against the cranks. What am I doing wrong here. Can i just hammer the spindle back center?

  • Wow!

How did you do that then?

Crank bolt won't have done that, as its not having a net effect on the BB axle, only the end of the axle vs crank taper.
I would guess at least one bearing has collapsed allowing the shaft to wander to one side.

  • took it apart and it all looked fine except the spindle being offset. gently hammered the two washers back into their grooves and pushed the rest into place. damnit.

  • So the bearing race surfaces on the BB shell are OK and assembled back in teh correct order, and the BB spindle is OK, and the right number of bearings are in there? Should be fine then!

I suspect you might have put something back in the wrong order, take it apart and give it another try.

  • yeah i thought id gotten the bearings wrong but it wont come together any other way. One big bearing on the left and two small on the right.

hopefully it wont move again now when the rings are knocked back in their grooves.

    thank you :)
