Wimbledon Common. Advice please

  • Can anybody advice wheteher there is an East-West route through the common suitable for road tyres?
I'd like to try a new commute route and it would be great if I could cross it. People tells me is not great for thin tyres but I'd like to know for sure and I am sure there are a few people who know it well in here.

I thought there was one, to get from Parkside, behind the Windmill, to Richmond Park, but either my navigation skills are rubbish, or the reality is that there are horse and mud paths that have to be encountered as well as tarmac sections.

Therefore, cx/mountain bike would be fine, but finest tubs are going to take a kicking.

  • I have been down there before... once and never again. There's an uneven gravel track that runs in an almost perfect straight line from Wimbledon Golf Course to the Robin Hood Gate entrance to Richmond Park.

Would not recommend going down there on a road bike. You're possibly going to be better off circling slightly south of Wimbledon Common, down the hill to the A3 flyover. Saying that, where are you trying to get to?

  • Rowhan, My route is from Tooting (Streatham Cemetery) to Twickenham.
I am currently doing it along Garrat Lane, Upper Richmond Road, Richmond Park and across the river, but I am keen to find an alternative, possibly accross Wimbledon Common, or as you say, to the south of it.
I am not too bothered about doing extra distance as long as it's on a nice route

  • Ah Tooting you say, sort of my neck of the woods. I'd head to the Roehampton gate entrance of Richmond park via back streets of Roehampton.

Then through the middle of RP to Ham Gate, down the hill to the main crossroads, straight over and head for the footbridge across the Thames....
after that you're practically there and barely touching a single main road other than having to cross the A3 one time.

I'll upload my route .jpg when I get a chance

  • No, there isn't. All gravel or trails.

  • Rowhan, thanks mate. I'll give it a go, looks nice

  • I envy those of you with a nice commute like that ^^^

  • Yeah, mine involves the A40 and hanger lane gyratory...

  • I tried to cut across WC on a singlecross with 28mm slicks and ended up slipping and sliding all over the place. On a road bike you'd be on your arse.

  • not really anyway across wimbledon common unless you some cx tires at a push , best going through roehampton backroads?

  • I have road bike and have cycled across Wimbledon common loads of times. Most of the paths are suitable for thin tired bikes as they are not too stoney and bumpy. The only problem is mud so fit mudguards to your bike if possible. You may struggle to get up some of the steeper hills if traversing the common from east to west but being a road bike they are light enough to pick up and carry or push up hills.

  • You need to watch out for wombles.
