  • This thread will concern the various popular new operating systems. Its in this separate thread, as Velocio thinks it should stand apart from the Android thread.

So for news and info about the following OS' and more, this is the place.

    Symbian
    Maemo
    Web OS
    Meego
    Bada
    Firefox OS (formerly Boot2Gecko)
    Windows Phone 8 (blame Dammit)
    Ubuntu for Android
QNX Blackberry 10 [maybe best discussed in the Blackberry thread]
    Tizen

look at Mozilla Boot 2 Gecko mobile operating system - YouTube[/ame]

Firefox OS (the new name) looks quite interesting.

  • Windows Phone 8?

  • Grumbles..............

    :-)

Yes, of course I'll add it. I think their ecosystem will be a winner actually. Especially their tablets.

  • That's essentially just a list of OSes that have been or will be killed by the commoditization of android, especially in developing countries.

  • You're wrong and determined to be so.

Symbian is still active - Nokia 808 Pureview
Meego is still active - Nokia N9 is getting its latest update right now
Web OS is possibly making a comeback in 2013
Firefox OS is brand new, and will be in the marketplace in months.

Of the rest, only Bada and Maemo have been shelved.

  • I'd say that the only OS that are actually important in terms of scale for the future are iOS, Android, Blackberry 10 (if it arrives before they go bust) and Windows 8 (if it arrives before Nokia go bust).

Ironic that Microsoft will make more money on each Android handset shipped than they will on each Nokia/Win8 handset shipped, but thats patents for you.

  • Nokia and its associated OSes are on a downward spiral if you don't include wp8.
Blackberry 10 remains to be seen. Web OS, although now open source, doesn't stand the best of chances.
Firefox OS is the wildcard because its truly open and actually has OEMs backing it at launch - I also have a lot more faith in Mozilla's release dates than the majority of companies. Its debut is in Brazil which is a bit of an unusual market for smart phones: android does exceptionally well there with some handset makers but HTC are actually bailing on the country because they just arent popular there. Its analogous to blackberries popularity here compared with the US.
Also, its application development is all HTML5, so don't expect gta to be released on these things...
What I said about android was partly true though, it has become commoditized because of how easily it can be cut down for cheap feature phones and that's what's making it explode in places like south America etc. That's also why its become so fragmented.

Symbian is dead, the 808 is the final product on it.

Meego is dead, the N9 is just getting in market updates. Quite why is hard to fathom.

Web OS is dead. No-one wants it.

Firefox OS is likely to go the same way.

  • andyp, I don't think there is anyone on this forum that knows more about mobile OSes than yourself, so obviously I value your opinion. Don't you think it's possible that Jolla is a fallback position for Nokia, if Windows doesn't sell in Europe and Asia, as it's beginning to do in the USA? I know Jolla is a separate company, but they're really all old Nokia chums. Not a possibility?

  • Good idea for a thread. I'm currently trawling through the xda forum looking at Windows Phone 7.5 hacking. I'm not a software developer, this may take some time.

  • Also, Mozilla's efforts are looking really really android 1.0 but at least they have something.

  • I like that... Jolla looks interesting...

  • Jolla looks rather nice.

  • What problems does it solve? Looks like Android's task list view. Wow they set a wallpaper..

    What am I missing?

  • ^ Visually illiterate... Nokia money?

  • Nokia don't have any money.

  • Ha! They had some good talent, just got a bit stifled by upper management feuds.

  • "a bit stifled"

    What's a Nokia?

  • Ha! They had some good talent, just got a bit stifled by upper management feuds.

They had a lot of dross too.

And a complete disconnect between decisions made at the board level and what was happening on the ground.

  • RIP Symbian

The Nokia 808 PureView, a device which showcases our imaging capabilities and which came to market in mid-2012, was the last Symbian device from Nokia.

It had a fairly good run...

  • Aww I liked some of their stuff...

  • ^^ Thank fuck for that.

Trying to make shit work in a Symbian browser is only for the masochistic.
Let's hope Blackberry follows in swift succession.
