Help me understand hub width & spacing.

Posted on
  • Hi everyone. I'm really new to this and Sheldon Brown's website has been my religious text for the last few days but I have a question I haven't found the answer for.

I'm searching for a flip flop hub. The rear dropout spacing on my frame is 126mm.

If a hub is too narrow, is it possible to switch out the axle for a longer one to accommodate wider dropouts?

  • whats the frame made of?

  • It's made of steel.

  • Pretty much all hubs can be respaced to 126, but this might require a new axle. The reason Balki asked what it was made of is that, assuming it's steel, it's fine to use a 120 and just do up the axle nuts until it pulls the frame in a little. It'll only be 3mm each side.

  • OK, thanks so much :) I can go ahead an pick up a 120mm hub I saw at the local community workshop!

  • Hi TerryXL, I've literally got the same problem. I realise that you posted this a while ago but I was wondering how well the flip flop hub that was 120mm fit in the 126mm rear spacing. Any advice would be great :)
