Bottom bracket for 80's frame?

  • Not sure which section to post this

I have a Benotto frame, Italian bb, that I am building up

So far all parts I have are Campagnolo Super or Nuovo record

Can you still get campag bb's to fit the frame and chainset new? Or do I need to get one from the same era as my chainset?

    cheers

  • picture of chainset?

  • looks like nuovo record > http://velobase.com/ViewComponent.aspx?ID=5DA356F4-3D31-4395-BDAF-190893AFB431&Enum=115&AbsPos=31 <

so give their recommendation a go [disclaimer: finding the right bb axle length can be a very trial and error affair]

    to quote:

The pre-1978 cranks used a 112mm axle (68mm BB) or 113mm axle (70mm BB). 1978 onwards, Campy changed the design of their cranks slightly to incorporate a wider front derailleur and therefore also changed their bottom bracket axle lengths. 1978 and onwards required a 114.5mm axle (68mm BB) or 115.5mm axle (70mm BB. These axles should have +1 and +1.5 engraved on the axle itself (not always?). To confuse things further, I think they may have also continued to sell the original length axles for some years after the introduction of the new axle lengths. I hope this helps you find the matching BB for your crankset

So Campagnolo were also muddying the water

  • 1 of 4! shite!

    cheers rive gauche

so are these still available new?

  • you could pop an Shim UN55, or a Campag Veloce, both available in 115mm italian thread. else ebay a NOS unit

  • i have a barely used nuovo record in box complete, 114.5, thick walled cups
    british thread

  • Cheers hilly but i need Italian thread

  • sorry reading fail

You know you need an Italian BB, so that narrows it down to two: pre-'78 is 113mm and post-'78 is 115.5mm.

Which one you need is dependent on the front derailleur: post-'78 the derailleur was wider, hence the wider BB.

These do crop up on eBay quite regularly (there are a couple on there at the moment), failing which 115.5mm is the current triple BB so they are available as cassettes.

I'm not sure that 113mm has been used for other groupsets, so I don't know what alternatives are available

  • Cheers everyone

That 10 quid one has to be worth a pop

  • yes, and don't worry about 1/2mm here or there. as long as the centreline of the chainset is roughly on the centreline of the cassette it'll be fine.

only minor caveat: those veloce bbs require yet another specialist tool..

  • I'll get the lbs to tighten it

    cheers for the help
