  • As requested, a thread to chat about art we've seen and to recommend shows of note. Perhaps we could merge the 'Modern Art thread to this one so as to broaden the remit of the thread and keep it lively?

I'll start with some shows I'm currently planning to visit...

David Altmejd at Stuart Shave Modern Art until the 23rd June. http://www.modernart.net/view.html?id=1,4,673,714

Alexis Harding at Mummery & Schnelle until 23rd June. http://www.mummeryschnelle.com/index.htm

  • I'm looking forward to the Pre-Raphalites exhibition coming to the Tate Britain in September.

  • I've been meaning to go to the da Vinci exhibition at the Queen's gallery, whilst this collection contains his studies of anatomy and not exactly art for arts sake, I reckon it can be considered fine art if you'd like it to.

  • I should say so.

  • Can I have some Odelin Redon, I like him? Is that fine, or impressionism? #iknowwhatilike

  • It's fine. I think the term 'Fine Art' extends to all art which is created primarily by 'artists' as opposed to designers, artisans, crafts people, architects etc. Pure art if you will. It's a broad church (hence the thread). There are grey areas of course, but Redon isn't in a grey area, he's plum in the centre of the big 'fine', symbolist heart of it.

While we're on the subject, I just went to Amsterdam's Van Gogh Museum to have a gawp at 'Dreams of Nature' - a show about symbolist landscape. Some corking Redons in there.

  • Yes I saw The Buddha there, I was in awe - it was vibrating - incredible

  • I'm looking forward to the Pre-Raphalites exhibition coming to the Tate Britain in September.

Almost probably certainly going to this.

  • Trolololololololoollooooooolllllllll

  • i'm sorry to offend anyone from the serious art establishment, no really..

  • Internetz art chat is serious.

  • i'm sorry to offend anyone from the serious art establishment, no really..

I'd consider that a proud achievement, as they'd usually try to pretend that they're Teflon-coated.

  • They do?

  • Anything goes.

  • Is that a Hockernee?

  • So Sarah Sze at Victoria Miro is well worth a look. She's managed to make an installation which deals beautifully with life, light, time, the universe and everything, while negotiating the subjects of objecthood, formal placement and the evolution of ideas all in one sprawling super hit of a show. Really worth a diversion off the Hipster Spice route to Wharf Road. Plus you get a chance to see Grayson Perry next door while you're at it. He's off the telly you know (good show too as it happens).

Also recommend John Currin at Sadie Coles HQ on South Audley st. That chap can paint for sure, we know that already, but this show is a better, more complex examination of the tradition of female nude in fine art than his last - more porny - show and there is some serious technical skillz on display.

Plus massive group show The Perfect Nude (theme here perhaps) opens tomorrow night at Charlie Smith on Old Street. A real peek into the grubby minds of some of London's famous London's best practitioners and the beer goggled vision they have of their nearest and dearest sans pants!

  • Anyone seen this yet at the V&A? (My avatar is actually earlier work by the artist, Charming Baker. He is a fine chap and cyclist himself).

  • ^I don't understand :(

  • Britain Creates 2012: Fashion + Art Collusion is V&A exhibit. That sculpture is collaboration of Charming Baker and Paul Smith.

i think it is a juxtaposition of the brakeless fixies not being able to stop when the black cab pulls out in front of it and the elemental forces of speed felt when on the track

either that or he likes silver paint

for an artist he's got the chain tightness spot on

  • It's actually cast aluminium and weighs less than Chainbreaker's dream bike.

  • Argh Reece you've just reminded me I forgot to see the Grayson Perry at the Miro before coming over here.

I went to see a documentary about Gerhard Richter last night, called Gerhard Richter Painting. I'm not sure about his newer works, but I love the way he creates and explains them. He comes across really well, a very likable chap with a dry sense of humour.

I think he's a bit of a genius actually, I would like to see him explaining some of the older works which I recently missed at the Tate and have now also missed at the Neue Nationalgalerie, because the tiny bits I heard him say about photographs, which were quite prominent in his earlier works, were beautiful.

  • I'm looking forward to the Pre-Raphalites exhibition coming to the Tate Britain in September.

Is'nt Millais already at Tate (millbank)

Millais is my favourite, favourite, favourite..... The order of Release being my favourite of his work. I could cry at the detail.
