No idea if this would work, but I saw one of these in a shop a while ago and wondered if it would do the job. Only £30 so if I was off on a tour I'd be tempted.

I looked into converting some vintage dynamo lights to LED operation, but like Brucy suggested, it's quite a complicated process (well, for an electronics novice like me) - the main problem being that bottle dynamos are actually not dynamos at all, but alternators. So you'll need a bridge rectifier to convert it to DC and then a capacitor to smooth out the current and then you'll have to do some fiddling to get the right sort of charging voltage. I can't remember how much power you can get out of a bottle dynamo; it might not be enough to run a phone that's in constant use.
Bottle dynamos add a noticeable amount of resistance, by the way. Even a cheap hub dynamo is a better proposition.

If you want some help id be happy to.

It depends on how much current you think you could deliver. The iPhone (well 3G at least) has two charging modes IIRC and can pull two different level of current. This is good for older USB ports.
Anyway, you'd want a dynamo which will nominally provide around 6V or more, and then regulate this to 5V with a 7805 regulator or similar. The problem comes if you cannot provide enough current, and this would need to be tested with the dynamo on the bike really.

I'd not thought about this before, but love the idea. Did some searching for ready made options. This looks expensive, but is down the right lines.

There seems to be cheaper variations, but so far I've only found them in the US.

I like the wind turbine. Wonder how much the output is.

that is great. now to find a version that looks italian

might be sleeker to put the actual rim dynamo on the rear wheel and run the wire sleeky along

yeah i'm gonna try to figure something out for that dynamo bracket. must be possible to do it more elegantly. If it wasnt for englands fine english weather id mount it under the bottombracket shell.

A new rim dynamo system that I just read about in Velo Vision:

No adaptor kit to charge iPhones yet, I suppose.

Just seen this when browsing the Halfords website, so checked You tube as I couldn't see how it worked. I'm impressed.

I would much rather have my iphone on the bars doing strava and google maps than getting a cycle computer.
Change apps then.
Like offmaps for example where you can download the map on the phone without constantly downloading the map from Google as you ride.
save a decent chunk of battery on the iPhone, even with GPS on.

Are you going any further afield than the UK? Cos data charges will kill you....
-
• #18
Hence offmaps + GPS.
Used it a lots when I was in Barcelona, really useful to have a working map without paying for internet charge.
-
• #19
Hhmmmm.... could be useful for me as well. What do you do, just download the area you need?
-
• #20
pretty much.
take up a lots of space if you decided to download a high resolution image of the area, but for general mappage, it should sufficent.
There are other choices too that also download an OS survey map;

Reckon this plus mophie's juice pack plus* and you're sorted.
*battery last twice as long with an inbuild charger.
Done a fair bit of searching on here and on the google but I cant seem to find a reasonable solution for this. Wich im sure exists. I'm going touring alter this summer and I would much rather have my iphone on the bars doing strava and google maps than getting a cycle computer. But since the iphone4 batteries goes out in under 5 hours like this Im trying to find a charging solution. Something that is not a solar panel or a battery pack.
It seems there should be something fairly cool out that goes on the rim like a proper dynamo isn't hub dependant by now?
