I have one, what sort of wall is it?
-
• #3
presuming you "own" the leasehold to the flat, you almost certainly still need permission from the freeholder, you know that right?
-
• #4
hope it's not supporting
-
• #5
One by Broadway Market if you'd like. It's been used to knock a supporting wall out of my flat so I know it works. It didn't look that sturdy...

• #6
Oh yeah, if it's stud-work and plaster just use a claw hammer, saw and crow-bar. You'll only need a sledge hammer for block work.

(I'm sure you've had all this explained in your survey but) Even if it's not a structural wall it could still be adding stiffness to the floor above, so removing it could introduce deflection to the floor joists. Worth bearing in mind since it might cause cracking of finishes (then again, so will the hammer!).
Happy to pop round and give (unofficial) structural opinions should you want me to, btw. Although as I said I guess you've had a good survey.

Don't listen to this lot, hit the wall with a fucking big hammer first, then worry about the consequences.

Then you should get to this sort of situation:
And all being well it should end up looking something like this:
Don't forget to wear your safety flipflops as pictured.

I sincerely hope that's a mahoosive RSJ up there.

Ha!
did you start stripping the wall paper, then just go batshit mental?

No need for an RSJ when you have safety flip flops.
As Dr. Pepper might say
"Com'on, what's the worse that could happen...?"

at least there are some dust sheets

I feel shame whenever I look at the dust sheets, they impugn my manhood.

Yep, knowing that your Dire Straights collection is safe from contamination, as the building comes down around your ears, will be of great and long lasting comfort.

I hope none if it dripped on to *your *safety flip flops, thus compromising their legendary powers.

Any joy with the wall, Pete?

Ha, I didn't see all these replies, sorry. Max (who is local) kindly sorted me out. Update in the weekend ride thread, obviously:
Well yes, but when I say 'most of' I mean everything except the wooden frame as I've got an appointment with the neighbours tomorrow night, so should be able to see what the layout is upstairs.
It is exactly what we thought - stud partition which isn't joined into any structural bits, so if the peek upstairs gives the all clear it's coming down.
It already looks so much better with the light coming through to the hallway./DIYchat
I need to knock down a wall in our new flat and a sledgehammer seems like the tool for the job. I think I'll only need it once, and they're quite big, so would prefer not to buy one, so wondering if anyone has one I could borrow for a day or so?
We get the keys on Friday so need one ASAP after that as we need to get this job out of the way before the decorating starts. Currently in Newington Green, new place is in Lower Clapton.
Would be very grateful if anyone can help!
