are these jockey wheels goosed?

  • In an ebay dispute over a super record rear mech

the jockey wheels it came with were knackered

guy then says he'll send some replacements, and sent these

they look past their best to me

  • Lots of play?

  • Teeth are pretty shallow

  • tiny bit of play, not much, I was thinking that the teeth look worn out

  • left is used, right is ok, both are serviceable; do the bushings allow free movement when turned?

  • You can flip them round and get more life out of them, right?

  • thanks everyone

  • They look like the sort of condition I'd expect for an old used mech in working condition. If it doesn't shift well, let me know and I'll send you a couple of Campag 8-speed models.
I'd try the better (rhs) wheel in the upper position first, and apply grease to the bushing.

  • just looking at the mech again, it looks bent to me :(

  • Yes it does. To the right, at the point where it meets the pivot.

  • is it possible to bend back?

  • The jockey wheels should be exactly aligned, so it looks like there's been a twist as well. If you're careful, I'm sure you can realign it all.

jockeys should always be directly in line with each other. So yes, its bent in two planes!

Jockeys you've posted look fine, the teeth are practically irrelevant, its the bush, and specifically the bush of the top jockey thats important, as thats what makes the shift. A tiny bit of lateral play is fine (1mm) perfectly side to side, but no teetering. And they should spin freely and not move.

The jockey wheel on the right of the top pic looks virtually unused.

  • is it possible to bend back?

Of course but getting it spot on is nigh on impossible.

Also if its alloy it'll be weaker once bent.

    So no.

  • I think I have one of those rear mechs in my "nice parts" bin if you need a replacement. I've also got the front mech and both hubs.

  • how many bins you got Ben?

  • how many bins you got Ben?

    Three!

  • How much are you wanting for it butters ?

  • Dunno! I guess whatever they go for on eBay. Drop me a PM and we can work something out.
