ss conversion > cassette size question?

Posted on
  • im doing away with my gears and everything but before i do, i have a question about conversion kits? the ones im eyeing up is this but it states its for 8/9speed cassette when my cassette is purely 7 cogged. Does this mean it will not fit, or can spacers help this situation?
    thanks!

  • I would go for a conversion kit that has smaller spacers and more of them so you can get a more accurate chain line.
It is also worth double checking that you defo have a cassette and free hub set up and not the older a screw on block type hub.

  • thanks Wj :] yeah its defiantly the free hub setup and not the screwy one
Ok so I don't have to go by the manufacturer hub recommendation as long as ive got spacers,...thats a relief!

  • The spacers should fit any hub, but the sprocket needs to be manufacturer specific.
ie - Shimano hubs have a different splining pattern to Campag so you need to make sure your sprocket splines match.

    Good luck with it.

  • thanks man!

  • 7-speed freehubs are shorter, probably by around 5mm or so.

  • If you have a shimano hub the kit in this thread could do the trick

  • is it possible to fit a shimano 16t freewheel to the rear 7sp shimano sprocket spline or will it mean buying a totally new rear MTB wheel with a track thread?

  • ^ No.

You'd need a hub with a thread for a freewheel to attach.

  • why did I even think this was going to be so easy?!! *looks for girlfriend bank card

  • Dude what's the point of buying a new wheel? You already have a splined freehub fitted, all you gotta do it stick on a 16t Cog Conversion kit and ride it like that.

  • oh yeah, your right lol

  • Rodabod answered your question very accurately, but you asked the wrong one. You don't need a 16-tooth freewheel, just as 16-tooth cog. You may find that if you take your existing cassette apart (carefully), you'll have a good set of usable spacers (though not enough to cover the gaps left by taking out the 6 other cogs).

  • thanks ben :] yeah i was confusing with my questions! but its good to know that if i need a freewheel on my mtb = new wheel!
ill attach a Conversion Kit, WJ was on about
