• Looking for a cheap solution for my rear wheel problem.

Have a complete 8 speed set-up on my bike and a 9/10 speed wheel..
My LBS can hook me up with the Campy spacer set (KIT-03) for €40 but i'm looking for something cheaper.
Does anyone have something lying around that's not getting used? Or does someone have another idea on how to tackle the 8speed vs 9/10speed problem? Is Campagnolo the only one making these?

  • As a newbie in the 'geared' department i thought the spacer kit was to make an 8 speed Campagnolo cassette fit a nine speed Campagnolo body.. after some googling i found it it's made for 9 speed cassettes to fit a 9 speed body when removing 1 sprocket (although i've read otherwise as well on some forums). If that is the case this i don't need the kit anymore...

  • I think the splines may be different, and you may well need to go with 8 of 9 and re-space.

Other alternative would be to fit an 8-speed freehub body.

  • Or you could fit a 9-speed ratchet to your right hand shifter (not that tricky) and get a 9-speed cassette.

  • Thanks mate. So there are a few solutions then..
The thing is: i have a rim + 8 speed campagnolo rear hub for cassettes. Having some problems lacing these (no money for flat spokes and LBS not keen on building these kind of rims) i thought i just buy a rear 8 speed wheel for cheaps so that i can start riding the bike. Because there are more 9/10 speed wheel available online my idea was to use one of those with the spacer set.

I think it will be just easier to wait until an 8 speed campy wheel pops up.
An 8 speed screw on will work the same as an 8 speed cassette right?

Last Q: planning on buying a new 8 speed cassette (Campagnolo makes those but not the hubs) for my vintage 8 speed hub. But will those fit/have the same kind of spines? Or are those new 8 speed cassettes made for the newer (9/10 speed) hubs (using a spacer kit)?

  • Don't buy a wheel that takes screw-on blocks if you want to run 8spd. In theory it will work, in practice there are many reasons why it is not good, and chances are the screw-on hub won't be spaced for 8spd anyway. By all means by a Campag hub or complete wheel designed to take an 8spd CAMPAG cassette. Don NOT buy a Shimano compatible 8spd freehub, 8spd Campag and Shimano are not interchangeable. If you wanted to make your 9/10spd wheel work with 8spd, the way to do it is buy a 9spd cassette that uses loose spacers between all the sprockets. You will also need all the spacers from an 8spd cassette, but since they come with every cassette, you could try bike shops that service Campag bikes as when changing a cassette, these would either get thrown away or thrown in a box, or ask on here for a junk 8spd cassette. Now all you need to do is discard the largest sprocket of your 9spd cassette (bear this in mind when choosing ratios) and use the 8spd spacers to assemble it onto the hub. If you find it comes up a bit short on the spines, use one 9spd spacer behind the cassette i.e. take cassette off and put 9spd spacer on first. You now have a 9[-1]spd cassette that will index with 8spd Ergos.

  • it does work as i have 9 speed ergo's and 8 speed cassette with 9 speed spacers fitted. it'll be a tiny amount out, but nothing thats going to worry anyone but the most exacting of people.......so i have a spare set of 8 speed spacers (i think)

  • i have a miche cassette which is 8 speed and compatible with my campagnolo 9 speed freehub body.

  • The width of all Campy bodies is the same. The difference is the thickness of the spacers, 8-speed is thicker (colour black).
Solution: buy a 9-speed cassette, throw away the larger cog, fit the remaining cogs with the black 8-speed spacers to your 9-or 10-speed wheel.

The early 8-speed cassettes and bodies have evenly formed splines. The later Exa-Drive 8-speed bodies have one wide spline. The 9 and 10-speed bodies are completely different in spline shape.

  • not sure if this will work, embedding photo - if not go here for excellent explanation of issues with pictures

This doesn't work. Because the width of all the freehub bodies are the same, 9 speed cogs are thinner, not just the spacers, so that they fit on. I tried it. As you shift up or down It becomes slightly more and more out. I think you can buy special spacers so that you can use a 9 speed cassette, drop a cog, and have an 8 speed one. Simply using a 9 speed cassette with campag 8 speed spacers doesn't work though.

  • I believe it does, but you need a thinner starting spacer to account for the wider chainrings..

  • Allright, haven't checked this thread in a week. Thanks for all the responses.
I'm still a bit confused but i'm getting there...

I just checked it and I've got an 8-speed Exa-Drive rear hub. So what i want (eventually when my LBS will HTFU + make time for my wheel) is a modern 8-speed cassette like this: http://www.bike-components.de/products/info/p508_Record-ED-8-fach-Kassette-.html , right?

Until that moment comes i will be looking for a wheel with an 8-speed Campagnolo hub for cassettes. If anyone has one lying around for cheeps (and clincher) and lives in NL or doesn't mind shipping: i'll give you my money.

I do live in the NL.... plenty of 8-speed wheels. Send me a PM.
