council destroy Holyhead Road cycle lanes

  • I was shocked when I rode down there today and saw the cycle lane markings were not going to be repainted in, they have been turned into sections of carparks, with markings the width of a car and a mass of cars filling up what were cycle lanes. I'm absolutely disgusted by this, and at a time of obesity and environmental pollution doing this to cyclists is appalling. The rush hour traffic must be hell now, if any cyclists get killed I hope the families sue the council for corporate manslaughter after what they have done.
Some years back a policeman told me the council must provide cycle lanes by law, so have they broken the law by doing this?
It's the usual thing though, "look after everybody else and fuck the cyclists".

  • There will be someone in your town listed as cycling officer.
Tell them your grievances so they know.

  • cycle lanes are often very dangerous bits of cycling infrastructure, teaching people that cyclists should be in the gutter and filter up the left hand side at junctions.

    probably better off without them

  • But now cyclists instead of their own lane have to be out in traffic on a road that's a car width narrower.

  • taking the lane is a much safer place to be.

  • What dj said, but if you really want to discuss the decision then Nigel Mills, Transport Policy Manager is yer man in the council as first port of call.

  • Sounds to me that if ANY roadspace has been redesignated for parking you've got fuckwits on the job

Not always. I get post for the last cycling officer in my current L.A, he now runs his own smoothy bike company plus a few other projects.

Specific to Cov, am couple of years away from there now but the last I heard they'd let the cycle training manager and the 2 school travel advisors go. Back then there was no cycling officer so to speak, it was part of someone else's broader remit.

I.e someone called Malcolm in a suit who rides a bike for one photoshoot a year, had a million words of horseshit written about cycling promotion in the ltp and hasn't got a clue,
    Perhaps

  • ^ worth asking Lee ;)

  • Fucking laugh if it was someone called Malcolm ;)

  • I've done my bit in the past.
I was in regular email contact with a policeman from Coventry station a few years back about cars blocking the cycle lanes, taking photos of the offender's cars and emailing them to him, he said police went and spoke to them. He said he brought the problem up a community meeting as well. It seemed he really cared about the cycling facilities for a while. Then he stopped answering my emails.

  • The amount of cars I get filling up cycle lanes along my route is ridiculous, I think i'm just going to start taking wing mirrors and paint small insignia's on my frame as if i'm the Red Baron...
And when the traffic is really bad and there is no cycle lane I just act as a car, middle of the road jobbie.

If they're breaking 2 highway code rules to obstruct a cycle lane whatever happens to them wouldn't have happened if they didn't break the rules.

  • yeah, that's what my argument will be (can you just inform me of what these codes are please?).

  • Can't remember exactly, I think one is about 'cycleways' or something, and one about cycling facilities.

  • cool cool, wingmirrors beware!

  • ^ hardly think a "Tooth for a Tooth" approach will do you much good in the long run.

Better to HTFU and take the lane, as you do when there's no cycle lane anyway.
