2012-06-10 - London Ditchling Devil (London-Brighton-London) 200km Audax, June 10

Hi Guys, a note to let you know the London Ditchling Devil is on June 10th this year.

LOCOG bagged our weekend from last year to open the Olympics(!) so we relocated to June 10, the weekend before the BHF London2Brighton event as it happens. So if you’ve missed the entry for the BHF event then this is the event for you!

The Ditchling Devil is a 200km round trip from London to the Brighton via Ditchling Beacon and The Devils Dyke. We start outside the Windmill Tearooms, Wimbledon Common between 7-8am and finish in Richmond Park at the Roehampton Gate Café with refreshment controls Ardingly (50km) and Upper Beeding (110km) and Chiddingfold (150km). This is a great route through rolling countryside with the odd bump but entirely fixable. Something around 70" is fine; works for me!

If you haven’t ridden an Audax event before – or even heard of Audax – the Ditchling Devil is a sort of organized ‘day tour’, a bit more organised than the Dunwich Dynamo but more relaxed than a Sportive.. We provide a detailed routesheet and GPX track for those with GPS, and controls & refreshment points round the route. It’s definitely not a race though there is an overall time limit around of around 13.5 hours for an accredited finish for those that want (hey, we want to go home sometime!). Most get round in 10~12 hours overall but if you want to stop off at Brighton, wherever, that’s fine too. Having a great day out is the name of the game.

The Wimbledon Tea Rooms (google it) are in Wimbledon Common, just over the A3 from Richmond Park. Royal Parks charge for events though finishing in the park isn't a problem, so we end at the Roehampton gate cafe, which make a great destination point. There is free parking by the Wimbledon Tea Rooms and in Richmond Park, though I'd like to think most riders will arrive by bike. Riding from home down to the coast and back is just sooo satisfying.

I live 15 minutes away from it hence my comment, a somewhat comforting notion that when I finished the audax, I'll be home already.

Also comforting that you can host the post audax party in an "all back to mine" type manner.
