Stem stack height problem

Posted on
  • Good evening.

I have managed to buy some pretty bargain forks, but with a small potential problem.
I was given some info by a third party saying id get away with a 170mm steerer length on my frame (130mm head tube with alpina integrated headset). So I have a headtube+headset length (top of dust cap) of145mm. Leaving only 25mm of steerer stick out above the headset dust cap jobby.

So the real question is...what 1 1/8th stems would be safe with this set up (a pretty low steerer stack height...25mm).

  • Could you not find a smaller dustcap?

  • Thanks for the links, but the first has the same stack height (10.5mm). The second is not stated. If there is a cheap ish headset with a 5 or 6mm stack height to allow 30mm on the stem clamp, I would be happy.

Or is a 25mm steerer length happy in a 30mm stem?

  • if the steerer were alloy and also the stem, and you used a bung instead of a star nut, it may be possible to get away with it, but it's not ideal

  • I'm not clear on the problem you're trying to solve - it would help to see a picture. Are you looking for a stem with a clamp height of less than 25mm? I don't know if I've ever seen one. Or are you suggesting trying to get a quill stem to use with a non-threaded fork? Either way, it doesn't look promising...

  • fsa do a fairly cheap low stack integrated headset only rises about 3 or 4 mm above the headtube

i sell them in my shop at around £20
