Take it all apart and look at the threds. Thats what I would do but what you wrote sounds bad. Hope you made it to your ride.

cheers GM, Afraid I didn't make it.
Took it apart at the time, cleared the grease etc etc and the threads looked to be ok (no strands of metal etc)
Switched cog and it seems to have tightened up fine now, however, haven't given it a full final tighten.
Think it'll be a case of getting it to a mate who might know more
Right, noticed my cog slip the other day.
Removed lockring, tightened cog.
Put lockring back on, tightened.....
Got to where it starts to bite, pushed to lock it in place and it pops loose.
Does this mean the threading has gone on my hub?
