Job done - all adjusted and ready to roll. All cables have been cut to size and cable ends have been fitted. Also fitted a new Selle Royal saddle, a new bell and a new rear light - and a bottle cage as there was sneaky bottle bosses I spotted today!
Price wise, it added up to more than I wanted to spend but aren't all projects like that? So on top of the original bike price here are the monies involved:
- Wheelset £40
- Tyres £10
- Tubes £6
- Cassette £10
- Chain £10
- Front&rear derailleur £15
- Cransket £30
- Pedals&toe clips £14
- Cables £10
- Bell & rear light £5
- Bottle Holder £5
Grand total (on top of bike cost) = £145
- Wheelset £40
I've had this lying around for a while and this was supposed to be Mrs Vince' ride but things have changed so it's going to be a pretty sweet bike for another lucky lady who likes red!
I have amassed a lot of geared parts from fellow forum members so I thought I was put it together (tastefully?) in one pretty fast ladies' 2x8 speed bike.
It is a 1985 MBK Mirage bike, 54cm step through frame. It was used for a year when new then was stored in a barn so it's in good condition for a 27 years old bike.
It looks like this when I pulled it out the barn.
The original spec was Sach Huret Eco 2x5 speed (52/42 - 16/28), Rigida rims on Maillard hubs, Atom freewheel, plastic mudguards, rear rack, pretty sweet Hutchinson rubber grips:

First step it to pull it all apart and clean/degrease - then regreased BB and headset:

Clean & polished bars, stem & brake lever:

Fitted a modern AlexRims DA22 wheels that can take 8/9/10 speed cassettes and colour coded Schwalbe Blizzard Sports (Thanks ElPrez and ApolloXL). The cassette is a BBB 12-21T so that'll be much quicker than the original 16-28T.

I picked up a few bits at the Herne Hill Jumble last weekend including a pretty sweet SR Royal 53-45T double chainset, an 8 speed Shimano RD-3300 Sora rear derailleur and a Shimano RX100 double front mech so I have fitted these (after a clean and polish) and adjusted the derailleur.

I have also fitted a brand new Clarks 8 speed chain in red and some really good Maillard pedals with Christophe mini toe clips:

I've rigged up all the brake and gear cables and did the necessary adjustments:
