Frustrating new chain creak

Posted on
  • Sitrep:
new chain to replace old worn and suddenly broken one induces pronounced creak from both cranks as the pressure comes on in the downward stroke.

    components:
New Miche chain, miche chainset (new chain ring very recently to) new BB

    investigated:
tightened crank bolts, chain ring bolts. Checked chainline and slackened off chain.

Noise persists! frustration increases! have i just made the bloody thing too short? ideas?

    merci beaucoup!

  • One thing a lot of people miss is the rear wheel.

If your nuts aren't tightened hard enough the back wheel can squirm in the drop outs when power is applied through the drive train. You think it's the cranks or bb but it's the rear wheel making the noise.

There's a check list here as well, good luck. http://www.lfgss.com/thread27637.html

  • I take it you greased everything when you installed the bb/chainset ?

  • Same thing happened to me fairly recently and it must have been because the sprocket wasn't meshing with the new chain.
    Replaced sprocket - noise gone.

  • don't think it can be the bb or cranks everything appropriate was greased right up on installation. interesting about the new sprocket! Rear nuts got over tightened if anything in the rage of trying to fix it, so i dont think the wheel is wriggling! really frustrating. have a day on saturday so will sit down with the helpful post checklist and see whats doing!
    much appreciated everyone!

  • Bottom bracket/chainset/pedal creaks are almost never coming from where you think they are.

Although sudden onset of noise upon changing chain might mean your the exception to the rule.

If you don't get any joy from your drivetrain area try saddle rails and seat clamp.

  • spoke nipples is another culprit

  • i'm with sdw, it's probably the chain/cog interface unless they are both new. Otherwise chain line?

  • 1 time it was the screws for the pedal clips, another time it was the locknut on 1 of the pedal axles, the pedal body had side to side movement of a few mm, would creak when Id put the power down.

  • BB would be my prime suspect. Pull the cranks. Check BB adjustment/tightness. Re-torque cranks.
