Easy Removal Front Brake & Lever?

Posted on
  • Putting together a track-friendly road bike (or road friendly tarck bike) and currently considering my brake options - I'm certainly not for riding brakeless on the streets so will want something, but I'd like a set up I can easily remove to make the bike track ready.

Looking at SRAM Rival front brake caliper, mostly because they are available very cheap at the moment, and I feel the stylings suit the Dolan Track Champion frame it's going on. Anything else I should consider?

Main thing I don't know about is what brake levers are available with mounting that can be removed straight from the bars rather than loosened and slid down - bit of a problem when bar tape is involved. I understand such things exist, but I don't know what they are. Can anyone help?

    Thanks!

  • Dia Compe have some nice flatbar levers with a hinged clamp.

If minimalism is your aim, most cross top levers also have a hinged clamp.

  • You will need to match the clamp size of the lever with your handlebars. Simple things.

  • Cheers. 'Hinged Clamp' and 'cross top levers' seem to be the terms to look out for - now just need to find a pair that fit my bars and come in black!

Regarding brake calipers themselves, are there any types that are designed to come on and off more easily than others, or do they all use pretty much the same mounting method?

  • Jezton, I have a pair of hinged levers, yours for a tenner, never used.

  • Interested! What make/model/colour?

  • Black, no make, came on an off the peg fuji track.

  • If you'll include delivery in that, I'll take 'em :)

PM me and we'll go from there.

EDIT - of course I should check - what's diameter of the bars they were from?

  • Just bumping this as I'm about to order an SRAM Rival front brake - before I do so, would anyone like to advise me to order something different? ;)

    Thanks!

  • Most (all ?) caliper brakes come off the same way, shouldn't have any problems with the Rival brake.

  • Is there a decent cross-top, hinged brake lever available yet? There wasn't last time I checked.

    • Paul Components - the best quality by far but not hinged. Their cross lever holds the cable too close to the bars. (Dear Paul, please please please make your Love Lever with a hinge!)

    • Cane Creek/Specialized/Condor - hinged and work reasonably well but feel janky.

    • Dia-Compe - all uglier than a sack of fannies.
