~30mm Black Unmachined Rim Recommendations?

Posted on
  • My hope of finding the rear wheel (or indeed wheelset if this planned front doesn't work out) I'm after in the For Sale section is starting to die out after I've been keeping my eyes open for over a month now and am yet to find anything meeting my criteria, I've decided I need to get something built!

Now my needs are relatively specific - for the rear wheel I'm after something that meets the following criteria:

    1. Around 30mm depth (28-38mm I guess - not after anything as deep as B43s and the like)
    2. Black - unmachined on the rear (machined on the front if I decide to go for a pair)
    3. Reasonably lightweight e.g. not H+Sons heaviness.
    4. Clincher.
    5. Good quality, obv.

Regular Velocity Deep V leading at the moment, however they are a touch on the heavy side maybe, and have braking surface.

    Anything else worth looking at?

  • Well you should buy the NMSW Deep V's like me :)
    Halo aerotrack, £80 a wheel

  • Velocity Deep V's do come with NMSW as per: http://www.retro-gression.com/product/velocity-a23-rims

There's also the option of Velocity Fusion, 475g, 25mm, MSW and NMSW: http://www.retro-gression.com/product/velocity-fusion-rims

  • The Kinlin XR-300 is 30mm, 465gr and it comes with NMSW and MSW:

  • Not flashy but only £100 for the wheelset:

Stickers come straight off and the sidewalls are machined (at least they are on mine) but painted over.

Here's what they look like on someone else's bike:

  • Those Navigator Pista's are real nice.

  • Was gonna say take a look at h+ F30. They look lovely, don't think they're too heavy, but
If they're not your think then…

  • I was thinking of the Navigator Pistas, but the sidewalls look odd painted over. Same with the other rims mentioned above - looking ideally for something totally flat black a la B43s/H+Sons, but not as deep or as heavy.

Realising they are 30mm, and looking at a set on my frame ... I realise I'm after something a touch deeper, say around 35mm. Maybe. Need to think more!

Basically, something deeper than the Velocities / Navigator Pista, but not as deep as the B42s / H+Sons :)

They look pretty good actually. Shame they are slightly on the heavy side ... but maybe not too much ...

  • Unless you're racing Jezston, a few grams here or there shouldn't be so much of an issue.

  • Try Varno's thread. Get an Lfgss discount as well

Exactly, I have SL42s, and barely notice the weight.

  • Plus you have to think about after you've built them, naturally they'll be heavier!

  • I know I shouldn't be being too much of a weight weenie, but it's a shame there are products that come close to being what I'm after, but with one thing I don't like. Trying to find that rim that's all the things I like!

I was tempted to order some of Varno's wheels, but those Weinmann rims are heavier even than the H+Sons. Again with the weight weenieness, but when you are talking about almost half a kilo across both wheels in extra weight, that's a difference I'm going to feel.

Taking my time with this build, want to get it right!

  • Thanks for all the suggestions so far by the way - while I do appear to be rejecting everyone I do appreciate it and it has been giving me plenty of food for thought!

Currently mulling over the H+S F30 for the rear, especially if I can find one in the EU in gloss black. Also tempted to just 'oh fuck it' and order a pair of Pista Navigators - cheap enough to keep as spares should I find anything better.

  • Ring Tokyo Fixed, they often have stock not on their website, they have some F30's in silver for example, not what you're after i know but just saying they might have what you're looking for somewhere, or know where you can get it

  • See if you can find a set of Reynolds Recons. They've got the same carbon rims as on their Attacks. They're a little bit hard to buy since apparently some marketing issue stopped Reynolds from releasing them officially, but if you can find a pair, they're excellent (and perhaps a steal - I got mine for $500).

  • kinlin xr300 / halo mercury
    kinlin xr380 / halo caliber
