What is your favourite London court and why?

  • That's it.

It's difficult for me as I have very fond memories at all courts but a few stick out:

    Mitchison Baxter:
this is the court that I first started playing on, cold winters, meeting lots of new people for the first time. Rik swapping my brake lever over to the other side so that I would stop crashing and showing me how to make a mallet.

    Downham Road:
lazy summer sessions after work, bbqs and all just as enjoyable on freezing cold Saturday mornings.

    Newington Gardens:
sooooo many good tournaments. I watched my first league game here. Remember spinning south over London bridge with the NE mafia. BAD vs Malice.

  • "Estate agent survey warning"

  • Newt going under the (polo) hammer at noon

  • Can you remember your favourite court Ray?

  • bermondsey

  • the tloupas bowl.

  • Newt... Cuz it's my spiritual polo home, so many fun nights and tourneys there... I ♡ the southern dragon...

  • peckham: Always dry, always lit, surprisingly warm, continuously sketchy, columns to dodge, low roof, (even Yorgo hit his mallet on the roof). Amazing sunsets as spring rolled around, rude boys, threats of stabbing. Pissy lift and bar story for guinness and open fire til late.

Vauxhall: Cheese grater walls, terrible goals, rough ass surface. Mrak and Muffins. First saw shippey play there and went 'whoa!'. Early kick out. Terrible court but happy memories. The name BAD polo or 'whose BAD' was invented there.

Downham: Always social, tyres always feel flat on the uneven court. Always get "what are you doing here?" Always get hammered. London klozed tournament, V day, league finales. So many skinned elbows on the walls.

Newington: So much summer polo, great tourneys, unfathomable amounts of tree sex. Wednesday nights saving my soul since 2008. My first trophy.

    Mitch: Polo olympics.

Downs: Sorse arse 20 mile round trip. Meh surface, shit fence. Fantastic L.O.

    i love them all.

  • Where was the vauxhal court.

  • bermondsey
    not brick lane?

  • No, Brick Lane is Emilié's fave...

  • Central Street court. (not really a fave but a blast from the past with good new-to-polo memories - Mike going very fast, Tom & Harry)

  • skoota where's that court that Joe posted up about before. You said you use it as a practice court. I cant see it on the Wanted: POlo Court + Lights thread

  • I must say Bermondsey is the stuff of legends:

    • hidden away in council flats
    • banked walls with extra harsh surface, you could ride above players if you dared
    • stupid soft surface on court that made shooting near-impossible and a risk for your wrists as the mallet would stop brutally on the floor.
    • big court
    • Epic Zombie vs BAD league game that ended with Rob's retirement
    • 20 meters from my house

Probably been done already, but has anyone looked at the court in Sunray Gardens (SE24)?

I had a look this morning, nice tidy double court, but no lights, and the council locks the park ridiculously early (7pm now, 8pm in summer).

Looks good for weekday solo polo though, I'm definitely gonna use it.

    .

  • Spring/Summer: Any court but Downham takes it.
Autumn: Newt/Downs (too much tree shit at Mitch and Downham)
    Winter: Newt/Peckham

  • @pk what kev said.
    @ kev what caz said.

  • Quorn Road: Back to the old school, where I first picked up a mallet and attempted to hit a ball
Downham: Lazy summer evenings playing, steps for chilling on
Downs: Same as downham but with grass and a better surface
Mitch: Massive size always makes for fast games, breaking ice off for league games is sort of a fond memory(all of 1 year ago :)
Newt: Londons most consistent court, shames its south

  • Do we have any of these in London?

Could make for interesting 1v1 games

  • the old bailey.

I had to click on this thread to see why you were all talking about courts.... fail.

  • ^ ha.

I have fold memories of quorn road, but at the same time I'd say it's the worst court I've played on! The holes and cracks... The uneven surface... Terrible to play on, but the bank of grass next to it was nice in the summer.

Newington is far from perfect, but it's my favourite if only because the lights are on till 10.30... More polo= better.

(although I realise that by that rational peckham should be my favourite)

  • From sentimental and social memories I love all the courts.

As far as progressing, Downs for surface, Mitch for size.

Downham and Newt for BBQ's, and getting drunk though!

  • fondness:

    1. brick lane
    2. downham
    3. mitch

    quality:

    1. downs
    2. mitch (when clean)
    3. newts
