Just a thought, is she into the idea of going fixed or even ss or have you just decided that for her? I would have thought, especially for a non cyclist, that in Edinburgh (which as I remember is at least a bit hilly) gears would come in useful, even if it is just a 3sp hub gear.

I explained that to keep costs down the SS / F option would be much cheaper as I already have the majority of the components required.
She is also into the idea of hardly any upkeep. ( By this she means I will do it all)
Edinburgh is quite hilly but shes in good shape and is pretty fit so I dont think it will be a problem.

Frame arrived pretty fast and was exactly how it was described by Woodsy at a bargain £100 including postage.
Off to Eastside Bikes to see what they can sort out for me.

So you need a 50cm frame and you gf a 60?

Long top tube needed. Saddle down I guess.

I read that as the spare bike he is stripping parts off is 50cm, but she needs a 60cm. She is 6ft2, I don't think 50cm is going to cut it.

Hey,
So after a year of gentle cajoling I have persuaded my GF to get on a bike and use it to get around the city saving us having to walk or take buses. I think it would be nice for us to be able to cycle places together.
She wont let me pay for a bike and wants something decent for less than £200.
I have a spare bike that I have lent to a friend - here are the specs
Velo Ecosse Single Speed Frame 50cm Red (Alloy with carbon fork)
Xkegmet XR-300 wheel set (Black)
Continental Gatorskin tyres 23 or 25C
Tektro R538 Brakes
Tektro brake levers
PRO Alloy Stem, bars and seat post
Continental Bar tape
FSA bottom bracket
FSA Chainset 48T 170mm
16T Fixed Sprocket (Variable)
Izumi 1/8th Chain
My plan is to get a fairly contempory frame in her size (60cm) and transplant the parts from one bike to the other.
I am certain I can do most of it by myself and will go visit my LBS (EastsideBikes in Edinburgh) and get them to help with any bits I dont have correct tools for.
Can you just transplant stuff from one bike to the other, the BB threading is English and a more modern frame will stop the modern components looking out of place.
Now the first step is to find a cheap frame for about £100. I have a few PM's floating about and some cash in the bank so I guess this is now a current project.
Heres not to walking
:)
