I've just helped my mates build up their dolans and I didn't use any tools for putting on the headset cos everything just slots in nicely being an integral headset.

Sounds like good progress - I'm looking forward to seeing the finished article!

Finished!
Here's a pic:

http://www.lfgss.com/picture.php?albumid=2194&pictureid=12603Rides like a demon. That rear wheel has made my life complete. Should probably dump the decals though.
Also debating whether to leave the white stem on. It was a last minute substitution for the black Deda stem I had planned to put on it, but the threads had shed so couldn't use it.

It's got the making of a HHSB, I hope, though that wasn't actually the intention when I chose the parts.

Yes the saddle angle is a mess.
;-)

saddle and bar at jantly angle - perfect start.

The resulting bike looks great with the matte black finish. How does it ride compared to the Langster?
I am looking to buy a Langster - but would you buy again or go for a Dolan? I've seen "Dolan Precursa Track Bike" available for a similar price, but I don't really know enough to differentiate between the two.

current langster geo is no longer like a road bike sadly, if you want a langster, go for it.

I prefered my 08 Lang for road riding over my Pre C, but decided to ditch both to go back to my first love - steel.

Really? What do you mean about the geometry on the 2013 Langster not being like a road bike?

I think he meant track bike. Ie it's slackened off/lowered for the road.
Depends what you wanna use it for I guess.

No I'm sure the Langsters always used to be slack with that slanting upwards toptube (Like most road bike) and not the toptube is more or less horizontal.

Ive just got a Dolan Pre Cursa FXE in matte black without decals... will post a picture when i get full access here!
I am struggling with the decision of wheelsets...defo V-Sprint Deep V, either the yellow or gloss black, I have a pair of red Schwalbe Blizzards and was going to theme the bike with gloss black bars, stem, chanset, with white saddle and white end grips...
Saying this, do you know how difficult it is to find bullhorn pursuit gloss black bars!!!! -

Thuekr - Ye, its got bottle cage drilled, cable guides and rear brake and mudguard fixings... didnt really want the holes but i wanted it without decals so this was pretty much prefect...
-
• #19
Where are the mudguard fixings, website doesn't look like it has any (unless they're the hidden ones inside the stays)
-
• #20
it's already on it, Dolan Precursa also have eyelit on the track end.
-
• #21
Only difference is that the FXE have the option of a front fork with mudguard eyelit.
-
• #22
Ah, thanks. It's pretty hard to see that from the Dolan website, and the info box says they don't have them.
-
• #23
They also said that Precursa/FXE can only take up to 23mm tyres, but they actually can take up to 32c.

The MATT FXE seems to have a blueish glow in the matt paint, is it true?
-

Its more like a very dark grey and possibly a blue tint... it looks the real shit anyway!!
I will get some photos up ASAP to let you have a look for yourself, but photos are never a good substitute for actually seeing it in the flesh...
My first ever build!
(Long long post more as record for myself, or 'how not to do this' for others making similar conversions.)
I've taken a few days off work to build up the new Dolan Precursa frameset (58) that I bought a couple of weeks back.
I'm mainly transferring parts from my heavily modified '08 langster, and adding a few new components too.
Parts being transferred from the Langster (*= not original equipment):
New parts:
Pic below is of the start of this yesterday. NB, I don't have a stand or work bench, which is prob biggest issue with the whole thing.
http://www.lfgss.com/picture.php?albumid=2194&pictureid=12574
First time I've done many of these jobs. So ended up visiting Push (N16) three times yesterday for parts, tools, help and advice. Thanks guys! Lovely shop, as ever.
Got the seatpost in and saddle on quickly enough. I've been treating the Langster like sh*t so most of the bolts are totally seized or tightened to factory torque.
Next job was fitting headset / cutting steerer to length. This is the job I was / am most nervous about screwing up as I don't have any headset tools, just the alternative bits and bobs you read about online as back ups. Found out that Dolan only shipped one bearing with the headset, so sort of relieved, called them up and got them to ship one out straight away.
Moved on to taking out the rear wheel from the Lang. and getting the freewheel off (Dolan has no rear brake hole so no point in keeping the freewheel on). I've done this before to replace a knackered freewheel last year, and it was a nightmare then. Fixed the parktool freewheel removal key, put a massive wrench around it, solid as you like, 90 minutes later of whacking the wrench arm with a mallet, it still wasn't shifting. Took the freewheel key off, angled a chisel into the freewheel ring, and started hammering that hoping to move or destroy it. No joy, so walked it to Push and 25 minutes later, with some solvent, a vice, and a lot of effort, it came off.
Next up, crankset and BB removal. Found out I didn't have the right tool, borrowed one from Push in advance. Getting the cranks off was a mare. Had to mallet the allen key to loosen the bolts. Prob never been undone, and had rusted in from outdoor storage. Once they were out, with a big of trial and error, used the borrowed crank removal tool (bit like http://tinyurl.com/7b9wl4e without a handle) to get out the fairly stiff cranks. Then BB removal. Had to heavily clean the BB ends to get purchase with the BB tool I borrowed from LFGSS's Gussio. With yet more light mallet tapping, the screws came loose. A pretty rust covered BB came out. Was going to transfer this, but it sounded scrapey. Took it to Push for 2nd opinion and to pick up a replacement if it was knackered. Only a few months left, they reckoned, so picked up a virtually identical cheapo sunrace BB to replace it, as it's a commuter bike first and i'm low on money. Sug 75 bb to follow maybe in a few months. Grease the BB threads in the Dolan, and on the new BB, and fitted carefully as threads tricky to line up. Well chuffed when it went in. Was nervous about that job. Then heavily cleaned my sug crankset and attached to the Dolan too. Tightened as much as poss but will prob take to Push when build is complete to check this as without a workbench it's hard to get that much force into the bolts without knocking the frame over and scraping / damaging it.
Finished up by taking the bars and stem off the Lang., cutting tape and peeling off, cutting rear cable (it was ss gear on there), removing lever with allen key, and brake, cleaning excess glue from the bar, fitting new pads to the ultegra front brake (not removed, straight transfer), cleaning it all, and putting aside.
Then fitted 16t sprocket to Halo rear but found that the chain whip i borrowed was for a non 1/8 sprocket, so had to park that job.
Day off now to hang out with my brother, wait for headset to arrive, and then hoping to finish it all on Thursday all things being equal.
Sorry for long thread, did put a disclaimer at the top though!
Any tips on getting an integral headset on (or good web links) without using the purpose built tools? I'll be selling some of the cleaned up parts / old frame from my old bike on here, for cheap, in a couple of weeks by the way.
