School Cycle Club

  • Have a nice problem in some ways. Work at a secondary school in Chiswick and have recently applied for and been granted £3K from TFL to set up a cycling club in school. As part of the application process, I had to say what I would do with the grant. Some of it's easy as it has to be Olympic related - so will get Rollapaluza in. On the other hand, I also said that I would look to setting up a bike maintenance class after school, so need to look at what tools, stands etc I should get. Any other suggestions at what I could organise/purchase (other than a new bike for myself).

  • Some bikes for those that want to cycle, but don't have a bike?

Consumables, like brake/gear cable inner and outer, ferules, bar tape etc etc.

  • Bikes are a nice idea, but being a secondary school the reality is that they'll get vandalised/nicked. Having said that, thought I might try to find some old, knackered bikes for the kids to rebuild. Any suggestions though are great - agree with the consumables CasaSteve, so thanks for this. What would people recommend for decent tools, without silly price tags?

  • Al, you could get in touch with Stoke Newington School. They've done various projects around cycling. I can give you a contact if you're interested. PM me.

  • This isn't a bad basic tool kit with many of the common bike specific tools in it:

Might be worth shopping around at places like car boot sales and cycle jumbles for some older tools too, as you may find the types of bikes you're fixing up/maintaining are older and use older tools (think BB tools and headset spanners etc).

drop these people a line or call, good luck with it

  • The youth offending team in Richmond have a bike repair and rebuild scheme for the naughty kids...
and the Kingsfield skatepark cafe (aka Kingston skate park) has also just secured a grant for a walk in, peer learning repair shop down the skatepark.
Either of these guys might be worth contacting as they both specialise with working with the youngers.
I'm not 100% sure if the youth offending team scheme is still going... but the Kingston skatepark scheme has just started.
    Good Luck

  • Maybe PM Katie-Coo? She does wonderful schoolkid cycling things and may be able to pass on some knowledge.
