Threading brake housing through handlebars

  • Anyone have a trick for getting the brake housing through an aero bar?

There's one hole near where the STI's mount and another near the stem clamp area, and I've tried from both directions and can't get the bloody other end of the housing to come out throught the other hole! I'm sure there's a trick to it.

  • You've already put the cable through both holes and the bars, and now you're sliding the housing over the cable and into the bars... right?

Or, were you trying to get the housing through both and then thread the cable through afterwards?

I haven't done it so may be wrong... but I would imagine that you do the cable first, and use a loop of cable to catch it and feed it through the other hole. And then sheath it with the housing and use the cable as the guide for the housing inside the bars.

  • you're putting STI's on aero bars?

I did it before put threading the outer through the first hole, then when it got to the point where it is in front of the other hole, poked an inner cable into it to guide it out the second hole.

  • Or tie it to a ladybird, pop it in the first hole then slowly fill the bars with water so the lady bird crawls out of the other hole with the cable attached.

  • drillium ?

  • Like Velocio said - make a little loop of twine or thin cable, stick it into the hole by the stem, then thread your inner through the lever hole until it goes through the loop of twine, then pull on the loop to pull the inner cable out of the hole. Then you can push the outer cable over the inner.

  • thanks, that should work - I was trying to get the housing through first, will do cable first and the looping trick. will let you know how I get on

  • Cable first, then housing - still fiddly mind

  • patience and lots of it.

but don't worry all the time you spend fiddling now will be quickly made up next time you ride with your new aero advantage ;-)

  • Put cotton thread in one end. Apply hoover nozzle to other end. Switch on hoover. Hoover pulls cotton thread through. Thread housing over cotton thread. Remove cotton thread. Push inner cable through housing. Works also for internal routing through frame, natch.

  • if you REALLY struggle, that green garden wire stuff (comes in a little dispenser and snaps off to length) is a live safer. Bendy enough to go places, stiff enough to be able to force through the bar holes and pull a cable back behind it.

Used it many times for pulling cables through frames & swingarms.

  • I've tried it (had to drill the whole bigger), but eventually taped the cables to the bars :-) - i couldn't get the right tension.

    Clever
