Resprayed bike frame

  • hi,
    i recently got a frame resprayed, and id need to face all the paint off the bb and headtube, fork etc, also the thread the bb shell,
    wondering if there is a cheaper option than to go to LBS...as its gona cost me like 50 quid?

  • I've always done this with a razor blade. Just be careful not to slice too much paint off, or slice your fingers to ribbons. Wrapping masking tape around one edge gives you a safe handle.

    You can make your own BB thread chaser by getting some old steel BB cups and filing two shallow across the threads at 90 degrees. Then screw them in - do one turn in, half a turn out, one turn in, half a turn out, then all the way out and wipe with a clean cloth, then back in out in out and so on until your threads are cleaned out. I've only ever used a home-made tool to clean paint/rust out of threads - I don't think you could use it to re-align damaged threads (you'd need a proper thread tap for that, I would think).
