  • Come and ride 200 miles. Why not?

June 9th from London to Norwich with a few diversions on the way, setting off very early in the morning (4am meet for a 4.15am start) from Trafalgar Square and finishing up outside the Forum library.

    Here's a rough route.

    Current list:

    1. Sparky
      1. Spenceeeeee
      2. Colr
      3. tricitybendix
      4. Twist305 (depending on date)
      5. Soul
      6. Joe
      7. Jimbojones
      8. tomm
      9. edscoble
      10. joshjenkinsshaw
      11. Branwen
      12. Hoke
      13. laner
    2. benjaminbunny
  • You have my sword…

    1. Sparky
    2. Spenceeeeee
    3. Colr
    4. tricitybendix
  • Looking forward to this.

When I have some time, over the weekend or otherwise I'll plan a rough route.

Thinking about it, would we be better to start in London? Head up along through Essex (relatively flat) and then out to Norfolk?

London to Dereham (near Norwich) is about 100 miles. My folks live there so that could be a handy pit stop. From there we can head up Norfolk follow the coast around and down towards Yarmouth then head in to Norwich on that road.

Norwich means It's easy for everyone to head home/ eat their own weight in pizza.

  • London start would probably get some more people involved, which would be good. Presume we could find space for people to crash in Norwich if needed?

Oh and as for dates/times It'll be in a few months once the nights are drawn out (more daylight)

  • I'm planning on doing this in June.
It has been recommended to me as a good first 400 - fully supported with lots of TLC at controls is a good thing! And it's pretty flat apparently.

It's more like 250 miles than 200 though...

If you're doing this in a few months this could fit fairly well into my 'training plan' as there are a shortage of suitable 300ish audaxes.

  • In. date depending. definitely for London being the start point also.

  • In terms of route, although it's nice to go 'Look, the sea!' it might be wise to avoid too much coast - if there's a wind blowing off the North Sea and towards you it could make going the distance a lot harder.

I speak from personal experience, injuries sustained on peninsulas and so on :)

  • Oh I know Fox, alternative would be to Dereham then Watton and under Norwich - could go around and in to Norwich from the North. I've had days of cycling on the Norfolk coast where the headwind has been absolutely relentless, if I was half way through this ride I'd probably be blabbing.

  • I'd like to do this, especially if it went through North Norfolk (Sheringham). :)

  • In.

the longest I went was 148 miles, right now feel like I can do double that...

  • Ok just looking at a rough plan. Hopefully someone will help out here;

    London up to Cambridge
    Cambridge to Kings Lynn
    Kings Lynn to Dereham
    Dereham to Watton
Loop under Attleborough round to Bungay up to Hales and in to Norwich on the Rockland St Mary road.

Seems like a nice route, I know the roads from Cambridge through to Norwich are nice and quiet but still pace through places where we can pick up supplies.

  • The Windy Millers ride goes up that way, but I'd still be interested, just wouldn't mind going through Suffolk...

  • The alternative would be to head up through Suffolk and come the other way. The only possible problem I can see with that is there are less big towns so less of a chance of food stops as I wasn't planning on carrying a whole lot (rely on picking up water along the way)

    Something like this;

  • Why would I ride 200 miles and end up in Norwich? Otherwise this sounds very interesting, why not do Aldeburgh and back, like a Benjamin Britten inspired Dunwich Dynamo?

  • What about dates, provisionally?

Just to get the ball rolling: sunrise on Saturday June 9th will be 4.44am, with sunset at 21.16pm. That's 16hrs of daylight.

  • coast to coast would be fantastic.

Spence lives there, my girlfriend lives there and Colin lives there. So it would work for us.

There are great train links back to London that run until late at night - you're more than welcome to join us.

  • Also the obvious answer to this is you wouldn't have to ride through London twice..!

    Nowt wrong with Norwich.

I have a DIY London-Brighton-London pencilled in for the 9th but this could be moved so would probably work for me.

  • The Norwich>London train has a guard's carriage with space for a dozen bikes. If you book far enough in advance you can get a ticket for a fiver.

I always get off the train at Ipswich.
