The groove around the drive side cup means it is Swiss.
Same thread pitch as French but the drive side cup is left hand thread. -
• #6
That's what I thought (based on the groove).
Hopefully the BBC will be serviceable, otherwise I'll have to find a swiss replacement... -

Problem sorted - threadless bottom bracket!
This way I don't even have to care what BB thread is in there.

I'd rep myself if I could!

can you just confirm if this is definately Swiss please?

I told my workmate to order the threadless BB today so we'll all have to wait until it arrives before I pull it all apart.
I'll take pictures of the threads/cups so we'll only know then.
No offence to Hilary Stone (£16+£3 P&P) but every pound is a prisoner so it has been ordered off eBay (£16.99 including P&P).

ah right,
" every pound is a prisoner"
Im a bit worried about these pounds being prisoners,
dont you think they deserve another chance? -

You checked whether the crank taper was ISO or JIS? Could bottom out if it's the wrong combination.

Ah, that old chestnut. Good old ISO / JIS square tapperage...
My money is on JIS but only time will tell!

Here are more pictures taken last night.
I couldn't use an English threaded BB so it has to be swiss or French.
There was no markings on the cups and I had to unscrew the existing BB by turning towards clockwise on both sides.I have now fitted a threadless bottom bracket so the case is closed...

Not sure what you mean by that.
I can see from the first picture that the fixed cup is left-hand thread whereas the adjustable cup is right-hand thread.
It's definitely Swiss
I would keep the old cups. Those threadless BBs are not that durable imo.
Right,
A chap at work asked me to help him with he has play in his bottom bracket.
His bike is a Peugeot Etoile that he reckons was built in 1988 - the front wheel hub says 1988 so it's very likely to be that vintage.
I've checked Sheldon Brown and other websites to find out what thread the BB is but I still don't know as 80's Peugeot's could be anything.
This website says that Peugeot phased out all french BB shells in the early 80's and it was all complete by 1986, which would make the BB on this Peugeot either English or Swiss.
http://cyclespeugeot.com/Threading.html
Here is a pic of the BB shell which shows that the BB cup on the drive side has a ring around the circumference - which would make it Swiss.
Have a look and let me know what you think. I'd like to fit a sealed BB on this (Shimano UN54) but if the thread isn't British, I'll just get new bearings, clean then grease it back altogether.
Cheers
