reaming seattube on 753 frame

  • I have a reynolds 753 Peugeot frame with 26.6 seatpost size and I 'm kitting it out with dura-ace. I can only find the requisite seatpost in 26.8. Would it be silly to ream out the seat-tube by .2 mm or beneficial for better fit? Would I damage the thin walled tubing by doing so?

If the consensus is to go for it, who would be able to do it in London?

  • It seems like a daft idea to me. Surely a better option, if you can't find a suitable 26.6 post, is to sand down a 26.8?

Either that or your could just buy this Ultegra one for £27 off Hilary Stone http://hilarystone.com/seatposts266264.html

  • yeah I know it does seem silly, but it's also quite old and gunky in there so I thought going down to fresh metal in the thicker butted end would allow me to buy the Dura ace easton seatpost I've had my eye on, which is high quality lightweight and has the required 210mm from insertion to rails which I need.

Alternatively I could buy a carbon seatpost, but going full dura ace is something I'm being a little obsessive about...

are you sure its 26.6 they are usually 26.8 or 27.2 ,i wouldnt suggest taking material off a 753 tube it will weaken it and crack

  • Just machine down a seatpost. Reaming the frame could knacker it and the seatpost would be cheaper to replace than the frame. Alternatively, try and find a seatpost with a quill fitting.

  • According to Bob Jackson site, 753 is 0.5mm tube wall. Reducing the inner diameter of the tube by 0.2mm would effectively reduce the material by 20%. Then theres the chance that the drill doesnt go in evenly.
Given that 753 frames are rare and sought after objects, only made by Reynolds certified builders, it would be unwise to machine it.

  • 753 is so skinny i think it would be silly to make it any thinner

  • I have 853 and the last thing I would consider would be making my own "modifications".

  • I would also imagine that the seatpost area is the point that needs the most support, as it will be taking a lot more sideways forces than most of the rest of the tubes?

  • In short, look at changing the diameter of the seat post as opposed to the seat tube.
