Wanted: 1" threaded headset

Posted on
  • Before I buy a new, <£15 headset I wondered if anyone has anything to offer. Old Shimano 600 or Exage or similar would be great, or Stronglight A9 or just anything really. Chrome ideally, or maybe black. NO GOLD etc.

    Thanks,

    Doug

  • I have a black Condor 1" threaded headset for a tenner if you like (plus beer if you want it fitting too). It's been fitted, but the stack height was too high for my frame / fork combo. Could do with a new roller bearing insert - I doubt they cost much at Condor, but haven't actually asked. Know what stack height you need?

  • have a threaded "Campagnolo clone" Tange headset.....looks identical to a 1970/80's Super Record in chrome, clean and complete ....asking £15.00 collected or can post

Do you have a model name? Sounds good, definitely.

No idea about stack height as it's a new frame, do you have a model as well so I can look for parts? Thanks.

  • says Seiki Levin Tange on the top/lower cups in identical way that Campag stamps theirs.... can send pics if wanted

  • See the bit on this page titled "Threaded Type Forks". Basically, what it says is to measure the steerer length from where the crown would sit to the end. Then measure your head tube. Steerer length - head tube length = stack height (roughly - you also need to take into account the locknut lip etc).

It's kinda important to get this close to right or you might not be able to fit the locknut - that's why I didn't end up using this headset. I think most frame / fork combos use the lower stack heights (33mm ish) like the Tange one Betty has going. The Condor is one of the larger stack heights (40mm).

  • Ok, cool, someone's been in touch by PM, but I might get back to you.
    Thanks a lot.

Ah ha. Thanks for that. I haven't actually got the frame yet, but it's early 90s, so it'll be 'normal'.
    Maybe I should just wait...

  • Mine was an early 90's Merlin and I worked it out to need 35mm, but used a 33.5mm and it's all good.

Perhaps get in touch with whoever you are getting it from and ask them to measure? There's nothing worse than getting half way through a build and finding one of the parts isn't right.

  • ....sound advice!
