Email from LFGSS

  • I'm going to be trialling some email providers this week.

Basically a few people said that they occasionally did not receive an email, or that a Private Message notification landed in their spam folder so they missed it.

So I've done some work today to find some third party companies who could possibly provide me with a service that increases the likelihood that you'll receive email from LFGSS, and that it won't end up in your spam folder.

There is some irony in this though... just by trying this out, services like GMail, Hotmail, Yahoo Mail all fight spam by remembering things like "LFGSS email comes from over there". So by just trying the service I introduce the risk that for a few days it might get worse before it gets better.

Anyhow... check your spam folders, let me know of any difference in service. If all goes well and more email seems to go straight to your inbox then perfect.

Oh, and one last thing: LFGSS only ever sends email that you want. I don't spam. You were asked what email notifications you wanted when you signed up, but if you've changed your mind you can edit them here: http://www.lfgss.com/profile.php?do=editoptions

    Cheers

    David

  • Oh, and if someone wants to send me a PM so that I know what these new emails look like, it would be appreciated.

  • One of the side effects of doing this is that I get to estimate how many emails LFGSS sends per month.

At the moment, based on a quiet Sunday afternoon, I'd say I send roughly 50,000 emails per month not including mailing lists.

  • I used to use mailchimp for runs of about 10k recipients...not sure if that is the sort of thing you are looking at.

  • For transactional emails (PM notifications, replies to thread, active your account) I'm considering one of: Postmark, SendGrid, ElasticEmail or MailJet.

Today I've changed the forum to use MailJet, which I'm pleased with so far but will watch for a few days.

For email lists, I'm currently using Mailman, but might use MailChimp.

If I use MailChimp it will cost over $150 every month, so that's quite a lot of money. But, I could always then use Amazon SES for transactional emails too.

Basically... lots to consider. But deliverability and reporting are the priorities.

  • Sorry, misinterpreted what you meant by sending emails.

Being an unashamed MS man when I used to do this sort of thing I just always used the smtp service in IIS...I blame Redmond for my ignorance ;)

  • Realities of the new email system:

    1) If your email bounces, you will not receive email in future.

    2) The Contact Us form has been demolished, just send me an email instead... it's on the page that was the Contact Us form, linked from the bottom of every page.

On #1, so far the reason email has bounced has been because it's incorrect. As in, once worked, then deleted, now doesn't work.

If you're on GMail, Hotmail or Yahoo and have never changed your email, fear not, as nothing will go wrong.

  • Have you updated e-mail addresses from profiles recently? I changed mine a long time ago but LFGSS e-mails continued to go to the old one. I monitored the old address for 6 months and set up an away message to alert people they were using an out of date address but I bet if I logged in the inbox would be full.

  • The profile ones on here should be updated by you.

The one on the mailing list is disconnected and the next time I send one will likely result in a big pruning session.

    spam!!

  • Yes, I changed the address in my profile but continued to get LFGSS e-mail to the old one. As you say, the mailing list is disconnected. Do you ever update it to account for people changing their e-mail provider?

  • I've just recieved a private message email to my Hotmail account. What an absolute winner! Nice work Veebs.

  • Velocio - ignore my PM. ;)

    First time in ages?

Nope, but I will in future.

That's basically what I'm doing... tidying everything up and trying to get it in order and sane.

    Lovely ;0)

  • Temporarily, I'm disabling the ability to email other members.

That is the whole: Using a form on this site, send an email rather than a PM.

    The reason is: It's broken.

I will put it up as a high priority bug and fix it Friday morning.

  • Alternatively, if people agree, I can make the system give out your email address, but it would only do so to other registered members (Google and the world wouldn't see your email address).

But I'm by default assuming you don't want that... so disabling it until I fix it.

  • One of the side effects of doing this is that I get to estimate how many emails LFGSS sends per month.

At the moment, based on a quiet Sunday afternoon, I'd say I send roughly 50,000 emails per month not including mailing lists.

After a few days, I can revise this upwards. We send 60,000 emails per month, not including mailing lists.

Oh... and anyone whose email bounces: Your options will be changed such that it automatically disables emails in future. To get them back, you need to supply a working email address.
