How to remove this freewheel?

  • Before being shot down in flame by the gods of LFGSS, I would like to say that I had a look on Google and Sheldon Brown before asking here.

I am currently looking for a clincher road wheelset for a friend who currently has a tubular wheelset (Shimano Sante FH-5000 hubs/Campagnolo Omega V rims, trying to trade them here: http://www.lfgss.com/thread78168.html)

For the story, Shimano Sante was introduced after the Aero style components in the mid 1980s, Sante was positioned below Dura Ace and above Ultegra 600. This group was intended to be a stylish semi Pro level package.

The bike runs a Shimano RSX rear derailleur and the Sante hub has a 7 speed cassette fitted to it. I'm trying to remove the cassette to see which type of hub it fits onto so I can buy another wheelset (clincher this time) for her - My guess is that i will fit older shimano freehubs.

There is no cassette lockring so could you please have a look and let me know what tool I would need to remove this cassette?
The hub is like this and photos are below:

  • That's a Uniglide cassette. The smallest rings unscrews anticlockwise. Easiest to use two chainwhips. Failing that, mesh the largest ring on the cassette by shifting onto it with the wheel still fitted, and stand on the pedal to hold the cassette in place while someone else (or you) uses a single chain whip.

  • Oh, you can transplant a 7-speed hyperglide freehub there if it doesn't have the internal locking thread. Looks like it may do though; there were interchangeable freehubs for a certain period.

  • Problem sorted! Thanks roadbod.

    This thread is now closed.

  • LFGSS - offering sensible advise since a half past two this afternoon.

  • This thread is now closed.

but you haven't been shot down in flames by the gods of LFGSS yet

  • They'll shut shut down this trivial thread and neg rep' me for waisting bandwith...

I do appreciate sensible advice and I have repped rodabot.

I've now read Sheldon Brown Uniglide / Hyperglide page and know which geared wheels I need to get for my friend.
