  • grumpy old man thread coming up!

I need to get some new basics for my wardrobe, ie singlet, socks, tee's etc. I just basic stuff with a good fit, that will last, and won't cost a fortune. I'm tired of having socks lasting weeks rather than months, and tees going wonky after a few washes.

So far I know that American Apparel makes good white tees for decent monies, £12 each if you buy 3. I'm yet to find a better option, though I've tried

Uniqlo used to do decent singlets but haven't been able to get them lately, so I now need alternatives. Is M&S any good? Or perhaps John Lewis?

Also need socks, colourful or black

    any tips?

  • M&S all the way!

  • I've still got Australia Post socks from 10 years ago. What the hell do you do in your clothes?

  • Uniqlo - sale on now an all...

    Mega

  • Matalan plain tees last well and hold their shape.

  • I went to work in my cycling top last summer and forgot to take a change of shirt by accident, got two black t-shirts from Tesco for £8 and I've been surprised at the quality and fit.

M&S for boxers and socks though.

I'm not sure what a singlet is so I can't really help there

  • TK Maxx have had a stream of crew and v-neck merino sweaters since september for between £17 and £25. I've bought 5 of them, they feel great.

  • I'm not sure what a singlet is so I can't really help there

Aka a wife-beater. But less controversial.

I do think of medieval pantaloons whenever I hear "singlet" even though I know it's not right and you'll have a hard time finding those in M&S for sure.

  • M&S - Merino socks £12 for 3 - range of colours
Uniqlo socks - wide variety of colours
    Muji - Plain white tshirt
    FotL - plain white tshirt
AA - Bulk order on plain tees

  • American Apparel Baby Thermal Long Sleeve Henley. Incredibly comfortable, amazing at regulating body temp, £24 might be a bit expensive but that depends how much you wear it, I've probably worn mine over 100 times, one of the greatest clothing purchases I ever made.

  • does anyone know a good quality ethical trouser / jean manufacturer that makes trousers with a 36" or 38" inside leg? I'll also post this in the "big frames thread" ha.

  • dunno how ethical Albam are, but japanese denim sewn in England

Out of curiosity, what's your definition of ethical?

    derails thread

  • 36"? Anne summers

  • inside leg, for tall people.

I don't know what my definition of ethical is - Made in the UK would be good, our labour laws are pretty tight. I guess M&S is ethical enough, Howies were, I don't know if they still are. Gap is not.

[edit 1: oh. I jusy checked the inside leg measurements for Albam and they do indeed go up to 38"! I will now research their ethics.

    Thank you kboy.

I'll stop derailing the thread now...]

[edit 2: gah. maybe they don't]

  • The guy who started Howies is now doing jeans I think? In the UK as well

  • For basic t-shirts, TK Maxx do packs of 3 Calvin Klein T's for pretty decent money. Mine are lasting quite well.

  • hiut. He's not started selling them yet though. And I bet they'll be $$$$$$.

  • Ethical Trouser sounds like a band name

  • hiut. He's not started selling them yet though. And I bet they'll be $$$$$$.

Their blurb pisses me off. I like Howies clothes as well, but I don't really like how patronising a lot of these ethical (and especially not so ethical - Innocent smoothies etc) feel like they have to be.

We make jeans. That’s it. Nothing else. No distractions. Nothing to steal our focus. No kidding ourselves that we can be good at everything. No trying to conquer the whole world.

  • Thread dredge but better than starting a new one?

Socks: It seems every pair of socks I buy is a bobbly mess after just a few wears. Am I simply purchasing shitty socks or is this an accepted part of life?

Where are yours from and are they better than mine?

  • Just got a big batch from Uniqlo and they’re decent; Markies merino are good too if you get a multipack.

  • For smarter but beautifully made socks, I really like falke airport socks. Pricy though so maybe don't meet the thread title requirements

  • I solely purchase M&S 100% cotton, padded sole socks. They're great.

  • Maybe it’s your shoes. When I wear trainers my socks last for ages, wore a pair of Doc Martins daily over winter and all of my socks ended up with holes in after a couple of months.

  • Decathlon Artengo black tennis socks are plain, minimally branded, hard wearing, breathable the right amount, and £10 for 5.
