Wire bead tyre narrower than folding?

Posted on
  • Just bought a wire bead gatorskin and put it on the rear wheel and it looks like it has a much smaller width (diameter?) than the folding gatorskin I have on the front. Both are supposed to be 23mm, but the wire bead looks much narrower/smaller. It almost looks like it's changing the geometry of the bike (lowering the rear end/raising the front). Searched on google but can't find any reference to them being different in size. Is this something anyone's heard of?

  • Sounds like its springing back into the wrong shape, compare it to another beaded one and see if its the same?

  • pumped it up?

  • Are the rims the same type/size?

Different sizes/versions/models of tyres will have different widths and profiles.

  • Tyres are often not what they claim to be on the sidewall always best buying tyres as a pair if you areally bothered about how they look

  • ^ yeah, wire bead tyres are often pretty different to their folding counterparts.

it happened because if you sold a 25c tyre, but called it a 23c trye, it would be fastest tyre in its class...

  • read this, goto 'dishonesty' section 1/3 way down.

  • The elephant in the room is: you bought contis, you pay the price...

  • Cadel Evans won the TdF on Continental tyres.

Also, I use them which is even more significant.

  • No Armadillos on the podium, to the best of my knowledge/

  • What's wrong with Conti's?

  • Kendas >>>>>>>>>>>>>

  • I was only referring to a famous dislike of Contis by a certain apple pie fan.

I rode four seasons on the a tnrc I managed to get to this year. Brand new. Got a flat five miles in. Meh.

  • There should really be a thread on this forum about tyre choice. Im sure people would have lots to contribute.

  • if only....
