  • I am sorting out the beater I never use to sell. There is a spider living in the steerer tube, his web is built underneath the hole. I poked it and he retreated back up the steerer tube, which is exactly what I thought would happen. I can see why he chose the spot under the steerer to build his web.

I need to remove his web to put the front wheel in. I can do this easily, but how on earth am I going to get the spider out of the steerer tube?

  • hoover

  • blow it out

  • leave him be, he can be your companion when things get lonely on a long ride.

  • Spider?

  • hoover

I don't want to kill him, I don't like hurting or killing things.

leave him be, he can be your companion when things get lonely on a long ride.

Normally I would, but as I am selling the bike, wouldn't that be like pimping..?

  • Drill?!

  • Find an Australian. They know how to deal with these things.

  • place the fork near a bright light that shines into the tube. Leave it for a while and the spider will leave to find somewhere dark to hide.

  • I have a spider and web on my rear brake bridge and I take him with me on my commute. He's been there for about 3 months. His name is Gary.

    Hope this helps.

  • exactly this^

i reckon you could push up the asking price as a result
    call him cuban pete

  • ^ Cuban Pete, lol.

Find an Australian. They know how to deal with these things.

I did think about this, but as it is not the size of a dinner plate I thought they might have trouble finding it.

place the fork near a bright light that shines into the tube. Leave it for a while and the spider will leave to find somewhere dark to hide.

    This idea sounds remarkably practical.

@Pifko, doesn't Gary mind the movement? My concern is that by having to remove the web to get the front wheel back in I have destroyed Cuban Pete's food source, so his long term outlook is not so good.

I did think I could leave the bike out in the rain, and the rain might wash the spider out. But the key learning from Itsy Bitsy Spider seems to be that this is a waste of time, because as soon as the sun comes out he'll be back up that steerer tube faster than you can say Jack Robinson.

  • Are you sure it's not a star-nut?

  • get a whole phalanx of flies to land un the web & when he comes out to eat grab him! Simples

  • ^^^ If I hadn't destroyed the web that might have worked.

So Cuban Pete seems to have had babies. So probably needs a new name.

She still hasn't reappeared from the steerer tube.

  • cuban pete is still a good name

no one bullies you if your mum is called cuban pete

  • Cuban Pete's babies need a suitable name too... Something like The Buena Vista Kings of Mercia....

Cuban Pete and the Kings of Mercia. Book them a gig at Ronnie Scott's and when they're playing there you can fit your wheel.

    Job done.

  • put a bird in

  • to catch the spider

  • He's been there for about 3 months. His name is Gary.

That is where he went? Tell the bitch he broke my heart.

  • This thread is full of win.

  • I really want a spider now. I have Spenvy.

  • This family stayed on a beater bike for a while last summer, survived all sorts of rain and parking shenanigans.
I don't know where they hatched though, the mother is probably still running around looking for them all.
