  • Everyone has done enough clogging up the other threads and saying this should exist, so here it is.

To start off, here is my very own bike polo mechanical question:

When building a bike polo wheelset, what tension should I aim for? Is it a case of going for the touring bike method of leaving them loose to soak up knocks and bumps, or tight to keep them absolutely solid?

I'm no expert on wheelbuilding, but can comfortably build a wheel to different tensions, what should I aim for?

    Thanks

  • Tight as the rim will allow, in my opinion. I learned most of what I know from 'The Art of Wheelbuilding' by Gerd Schraner, who argues that tighter is always stronger (up to what the rim and spokes will allow), and that you should never 'under-tension' spokes in the pursuit of a softer ride.

Spokes aren't meant to be suspension; if you want a softer ride use larger/suppler/softer/lower inflated tyres, thinner guage centre section butted spokes, lower profile rims, smaller flange hubs etc etc. Also, under-tensioned spokes create play between the head and hub flange, which leads to broken spokes.

  • loads.

  • gonna learn how to face and ream stuff tomorrow, will be practicing this on my polo bike

  • ^^ ha!repped

  • Silly question, but what's the best way of removing the small metal licking pin on a Paul Duplex lever? I tried a few methods (tweezers, a screwdriver etc.) and ended up scratching it a bit. It looks like two very small hooks would be perfect but what's a suitable alternative?

    cheers

  • Paper clips?

  • I like Drewzy's answer better. It saves money/probably doesn't work.

  • I used a flathead precision screwdriver and patience. Just don't lose it when it pings off.

  • If it does ping off replace it with a carefully formed paper clip :D

  • Is it worth buying the nokon extension kit (40cm) just for a front v brake?

  • hey guys,

ive got a problem with my new bmx cranset... i screwed the sprocket but it's moving when i cycle...

do you know if i missed something ?

  • Can you post up some pictures Mayeut?

  • nope cause the bike is at work...
basicly i screwed the sprocket to the arm, but there is only one screw, then put it on the axle and screwed the arm. but when im cycling the sprocket move... i did it twice... it drives me mad !

I still don't get what's wrong with normal cable outser and a spray of lube!

Do you mean moves round in a circle (you pedal and it just spins) or wobbles side to side?

  • yeah the sprocket is wobbling so its not in the center ...
hope you know what i mean ?

  • Last time I installed a BMX sprocket it had a lockring to keep it tight side to side and a hole in the sprocket which a pin locks into to stop it moving rotationally. It sounds like the lockring isn't done up properly.

    Pictures would help.

  • You need a top hat spacer. This goes on the spindle and keeps the sprocket in place.

  • What's the potential problem if I put a inner tube thats only designed for 700 x 25-32 into a 700x35 tyre?
