Cool, nice little review!

He also repaired Jannus's seat stays after they got ran over and it's neater than the original brazing.

looks like Ryan is doing neat work

He also made Emily's tourer which is currently winging her around the world without issue!

Sumo is bang on the money, Ryan did an amazing job on the stays.

Do they ever reply to emails?
-
• #8
Ryan's manically trying to get some jobs finished before Christmas, so may be a bit back logged on the email front... he's usually on the case sharpish.

Good to know, I'll cool my boots.

Any idea what a frame build would come to? No faffing, just a square track frame.
-
• #11
Ryan done something to one of my frames, great stuff!!!
And a bike Wicksie mentioned, must be pretty special when it's done.
Saw at least another 3 of his build frames. I really want one myself.

^^^ace. How much does he charge for a complete frame roughly?
-
• #15
That depends on tubing and lugset +extras...You would have to talk to Ryan. Anyway, if you want a custom build frame for a reasonable price in a top quality, Oak Cycles is the way to go!

Ha, I'll believe that when I have some idea of the damn cost of the thing. There's nothing on his website about pricing, and according to this thread, he's not very good at emails, so unless someone who's been to him gives me some idea, my only recourse is going to be to throw a brick through the guys' window with a 'how much' coda glued to it.
-
• #17
Or you could telephone the number on his website and speak to him?
One person commented about him replying to emails and that was when he was busy building bikes to get stuff done before the end of the year.
I would say there is no pricing because it can vary so much as pinarello said.
Just call him, he's a very nice bloke.
But, he is away for Christmas right now. -

I prefer my idea.

Ryan is fine with emails, but he's unlikely to drop everything and respond when he's busy.
Pop into his workshop for a cup of tea, or give him a call... it's fair to say that many frame builders get lots of "can you build me X,Y and Z for very little money" type emails, so it may be difficult to wade through them all when you've got better things to be doing (building bikes).
A phone call will get you front-of-mind straight away and you can find out what info you need to supply for an estimate (or when would be a good time to pop in for a chat), easy.

See I tend to do it the other way around - I need to know whether we're talking La Piovra sort of money for a complete build, or Feather Cycles money for a complete build before I even bother picking up the phone. Sounds like this guy isn't for me. Cheers tho.

Ryan is good value for money, but fair enough, it sounds like you may not be for him either..!

You sound like an idiot!

I don't know how much are Fearther builds, but one of Oak Cycles ones would cost you a bit more than La Piovra, but how much, will depend on tubing, lugs, etc etc... as mentioned above.
Hope it helps.

A Feather frame is about a grand. It's fine that BR would like to know. I mean, I'm vaguely interested in how much it actually costs to buy a custom frame because I've got no idea - I've never had one done. I'm not determined to have one done no matter the cost, so I'm not likely to call up a frame builder and waste his time asking only to find out I'd never be able to afford one without first having a first born child and then selling it to finance the frame. But if it turned out that a custom frame was within my reach for the price of, say, a distant younger cousin, then I'd get more serious about it.
If you see what I mean.

Feathers are about 800 for a track frame without anything special. Same goes for Mercian. Those are out of my price range and I'd rather not waste anyone's time. Cheers for that.

Yeah, standard for any custom jobbie innit.
I wanted to pass on information of this little known business in case anyone needed any frame repair, welding/brazing or indeed a full custom build.
Oak Cycles is run by Ryan who is on the forum and has been in the cycle community for ages so some of you might know him.
He's set up his own business a while ago based in Southwark and has a lot skill and experience.
I went to him to get my polo bike made shorter.
It's gone from a jump bike to the perfect geometry for polo and rides just perfectly, which was a hell of a lot to ask. His knowledge about what would happen with the trail based on the new headtube angle, and what BB height it should be, etc. was amazing, a real education.
His fillet brazing is awesome:
Another forumongers bike:
And I know of another forumonger who's ordered a full custom bike build, so I hope there will be pictures to come when that's done.
Definitely recommend Oak Cycles, seriously talented, reasonably priced and turned mine around pretty quickly.
