• Ok, my last expedition from forum 24 was such a success (getting a positive reply within 16 mins!) I thought I'd try again!

Basically I've got a set of cranks that are all ready to go except for the fact I'm missing what I'm told is a compresion bolt. Basiclly the plastic bit that pulls the two cranks together, bit like what a start fangled nut does in a headset... only for cranks.

Anyway, I've tryed getting a set from CRC but obviously got the wrong size, so if anyone could either offer me one or point me to the right one I'd be very thankful... if thanks aren't enough, I can also do beer or even money!

Picture of the cranks attached in case shimano deore LX isn't enough of a description.

    Cheers

  • 8 hours and no reply. Unlucky. ;)

  • can't you get aftermarket alloy ones instead of the plastic shimano one?

  • Cheers for the bumpage wicks.

Mrs myth, I don't mind what it's made from, any suggestions of what I should be searching for or perhaps a link? Pretty please?

I have looked and I have a feeling noone actually calls the compression bolts, the ones on crc are called crank bolt thingy!

  • it can be called a preload cap.

best bet is to look up your crankset, download the installation pdf and it should have the part number listed.

Ok that unfortunately only narrows it down to 2 choices, but luckily (! Maybe) crc only have one of them so here's hoping I have a fc m582 or m582k! If I have the m580 or m581... Well I guess it will just be a case of finding the right bolt.

Next time i see you prancer I'll get you a drink... Or chips if you prefer...

  • can the cranks be visually identified - sometimes on the inside of the arms they have the model no embossed

  • Probably, but they are outside in the garage and it's cold! :)

I might check tomorrow, but I'll probably forget.

It's much easier to just pay the £2 and wait to see what I get!

(also I found another thread on another forum [spits] which suggested the other bolt was the one I've already ordered and didn't fit... So chances are the one I just ordered is good! :)
