Mudguard clearance help - Tortec vs SKS

Posted on
  • So I have read through this thread and seen that around 10mm of clearance between brake and tyre should be fine.

Last week I bought some Tortec narrow mudguards off here, but even after playing around with the fitting a bit and trying a couple of bodges, they just won't fit without catching the wheel. It's always fouling near the bolt fastening, it's not about stay length.

The bike (Holdsworth Triath-Elan) has mudguard eyelets and is meant for 700c wheels, so I can't see that mudguards in general won't fit.

Does anyone know if the clearance of Tortec and SKS Chromoplastic mudguards is any different? Even better, does anyone have a pair of SKS not currently fitted, that I could come round and try, rather than buying some on the off chance?

I'd much rather have permanent mudguards than Race Blades or Road Racers

  • You say you have tried a few bodges, does that including elongating the hole that the top bolt goes through?

  • Not yet, before I made any permanent changes I wanted to know whether it might be easier just to buy new mudguards. What would be the best tool for cutting through the metal?

  • Round file, the material is usually too thin for power tools unless something like a dremel with a small stone

  • Smaller tyres.

  • Tyres are pretty small already, both 25mm and with very little tread. Also I imagine the less height the tyres have, the less puncture protection, which is a pretty poor compromise.

I will try and track down a round file and get to work.

  • Could you post a pic? before you do anything else

  • Of the clearance or the mudguard attachment?

  • Both preferably just in case its not the attachment that needs modding

  • Mudguards, with bodged attachment on the rear (right). Even with the attachment bent so it's flush with the mudguard, it still won't stay rub-free.I think it's the shape of the mudguard, and that if they were curved rather than angular it would be ok.

    Front clearance:

    Rear clearance:

Pics are crap sorry, only have my phone.

Does anyone have any pictures of the SKS ones from front on?

  • Thats quite a lot of clearance you have between the bridge and the tyre.
Bit lost for suggestions at the moment, other than fit them, kettle of boiling water and bend them to clear the tyre
