Cleaning STi levers

  • It is going to be impossible to write this without making some kind of inadvertantly smutty-sounding comment, so let me apologise for that right off the bat.

I have just received a pair of Shimano 600 levers in the post, the right-hand of which apparently doesn't always work properly. The seller (who actually gave them away with different 600 parts, top bloke) reckons it could just be general muckiness inside that is causing the problem.

So how easy are they to clean? Is it possible to clean them without dismantling? Does anyone have any experience of the 'Donald approach' as outlined by Sheldon Brown below, or any tips? Should I just run it a little bath of GT85 and foaming degreaser and let it soak for a bit?

The picture of the dismantled 600 lever is giving me nightmares about the whole thing

    Tak for hjælpen

  • P.S. I can see now that it was actually quite easy to avoid disgusting STI greasy discharge smut slips of the tongue

  • maybe an ultrasonic cleaner, followed by a re-grease?

  • Actually yeah, my LBS has a really good enzymatic (that is a word, I just checked) parts cleaner that would probably do the job nicely.

Do they need grease inside, or just a bit of oil?

  • Don't dismantle! - I took apart a 7800 shifter trying to repair it, and there is a spring loaded section which is less likely to be put together again than Humpty Dumpty.

  • Campy ergos are pretty routine- never stripped a D/A or other Shimano- here's some help, possibly.....

    Good luck!
