  • Rider trapped under a left-turning lorry at the junction of East Smithfield and Dock St E1W1AW. Road closed in both directions, fire crews, rescue, ambulance, police on the scene, right outside my office window. I hope they're ok, but it looks bad. Be careful out there people.

  • which way was was the lorry turning?

  • Is that Wapping? London Ambulance Service just tweeted they've take a woman cyclist to hospital who was in collision with a lorry. Hope she's OK.

  • All my positive thoughts for the cyclist. We don't need number 15.

  • I've tapped a source and found out the young woman has got very serious leg injuries, not sure if they're life threatening, but will update as soon as I find out more. She's only 26 years old :-(

  • Have heard a report: "Reports woman cyclist hit by HGV The Highway, north end of Tower Bridge 9am badly injured."

    Really hoping she's ok!!

    It's the same area, yes.

  • Good luck. Hope the injuries aren't too serious.

  • Oh man. I used to live on this road, I know that junction well. I hope she is ok!

  • It looks like the classic HGV incident - cyclist making a left hand turn with the lorry turning left too, but I only saw the aftermath. The police just told me she's "very injured but alive". They have moved the truck in the past hour or so, and the road is not a pretty sight, covered in blood and debris. I don't know the facts so don't want to make any judgements, but it does look like an undertaking gone badly wrong. The roads are still very snarled up, East-bound lane closed on East Smithfield, Dock St closed going North. I didn't think after this morning's soaking that my ride home tonight could be more unpleasant, but it surely will be now. Quite tragic.

  • Shocking. This happens far too often. I hope the lady makes a full and speedy recovery.

  • These incidents are not always undertakes gone badly wrong. Often the HGV overtakes and then turns left without completing the overtake. Those are the really scary cases, because sometimes that's a situation that's not possible to avoid.

Hope she makes a full recovery.

  • True dat.

To be clear, I'm not judging. Just saying what it looks like happened. It's a simple crossroads and the truck was exactly halfway round the corner at a 45 degree angle when it finally stopped.

But I didn't see the moment, just the aftermath, so it may not have been undertaking.

Whatever happened though, it is tragic.

Two lives changed forever today I think.

  • I hope that she recovers well

  • first and foremost thoughts and prayers for the rider, her friends and family.

that is a very gnarly bit of london. a very hostile environment.

  • i was overtaken and sharp lefted by tipper truck the other day.

i had to brake to stay safe.

i think he did it on purpose.

  • good reporting by the east london advertiser.

IMO it is a good paper.

  • It's a bit of a pity the East London Advertiser calls it a 'smash'. Maybe just me but it seems a little crass...

  • They have moved the truck in the past hour or so, and the road is not a pretty sight, covered in blood and debris.

I went past at about 2.30pm on my way to a meeting at Newham General and there was still personal possessions and claret all over the road. I know they've got to treat it as a crime scene and do stuff throughly but it's horrible to see it there so for so long afterwards

  • Sad news.

  • Sorry to hear about this.

Hope she makes a speedy recovery.
